VHS : The Hudsucker Proxy [1994]
This film would make my top ten films of all time. It is superb. The acting is first class and the story extremely funny even if a little predictable. My only slight gripe is that the storyline is VERY similar to a Gary Cooper film of the 1930s and I'm not sure this is acknowledged.

VHS : Dolores Claiborne [1995]
Who is Dolores ? - a greedy monster and a murderer or an unhappy woman for whom an accident is sometimes a best friend? Kathy Bates received the Oscar for her portrayal of a psychotic nurse in another King's adaptation, "Misery" but I believe that Dolores Claiborne is her best role. She carries the film and I don't think that any other actress could fit the part as well as Bates did which brings the question - maybe King wrote the book with her in mind, who knows? Judy Parfitt is extremely well cast as Vera Donovan, an arrogant ice queen, who was capable of understanding and care for Dolores and her daughter and who knew too well about loneliness and despair. David Strathairn deserves high praise for his Joe St. George, Dolores's abusive husband ... Read More:

Period drama based on the novel by Henry James starring Jennifer Jason Leigh (SINGLE WHITE FEMALE) as Catherine Sloper a young woman who has lived under her father's strict regime for long enough and plans to marry Morris Townsend (Ben Chaplin) a poor wastrel who takes a fancy to her (and her money). Her father (Albert Finney) strongly disagrees and drags her to Europe for 12 months hoping that this will cure her obsession. It dosen't but on her return she finds things are not quite as she left them.
It's a wonderful story and well acted, although the director does not let the actors indulge in the emotional side of their characters and I think this lets the film down slightly. Leigh is excellent - and credit has to go to Chaplin. His portrayl of ... Read More:

I bought this film because I saw about 30 minutes of it 10 years ago on tv, and wanted to see the whole thing. It's 2 hours long, but you don't notice it.

Included is a bonus extras cd which has 2 documentaries, one on the making of the film , and one on Raymond Carver, as well as other bit and pieces.

As if all that wasn't enough, bundled with the 2 cds, is the book "Short Cuts" which has all the nine short stories written by Raymond Carver , on which this film was based.

I got my film, but also a whole lot more, so this is fantasic value for my in my humble opinion.

I stumbled upon this film in my local supermarket and realised I've wanted to see it for ages but had never known the name of the film!!Once I popped this in the dvd player I was gripped the whole way through, this is a typical 90's thriller along the same lines as Fatal Attraction. It's a good film, and a good way to spend an evening.

As with films like Grace Of My Heart and To Die For, what makes this worth watching is its magnetic central performance. In this case, it's Jennifer Jason Leigh as witty 1920s writer Dorothy Parker. The film follows her through her life of writing, alcoholism, torrid affairs, and soul-crushing disappointments, which is not nearly as depressing as it sounds. Director Alan Rudolph made another film, The Moderns, about this period in American life when words were valued more highly than they are in the TV- and cinema-dominated world of today, and this one makes for a great companion piece.

Leigh, an underappreciated actress, may be at her best here as Dorothy Parker. Parker is a complex character to play - a talented, charismatic, furiously intelligent woman ... Read More:

Love it or loathe it, this movie is essentially a one line gag, although it will probably take you 93 minutes to get the joke. Although it's about a new totally immersive virtual reality game [eXistenZ], the plot has nothing in common with films like 'The Matrix' - there's no alien 'war of the worlds' threat or suchlike. In fact this film has more in common with having hot tea and crumpets inside Star Trek's Holodeck with the safety protocols off. Besides eXistenZ is firmly set in our world and time, although it probably does represent a glimpse of the Playstation-8 touchie/feelie gaming future. Like 'Sixth Sense', the films power is totally dependent on not knowing what happens at the end (and the middle for that matter). I don't see how anyone could criticise the final ... Read More:

seems there are lots of 5 star reviews for this film and whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion I just don't get it. It's a film from the 80s, not much happens, no one talks very much and then it ends.
A young man is framed by a psychotic hauer for some murders he is pursued by comical, Texas cop stereotypes whilst jumping round all the holes in the plot. That's about it. 'tense, gripping thrill ride'? I've had more excitement driving to work.
