VHS : Dirty Dancing (1987)
Dirty Dancing is a movie that is hyped up to the limit. It is recognised as one of the best chick-flicks and has somehow entered the books as a classic that you simply have to see. With all this in mind I only got around to watching this movie a year ago and have since watched this three times, each time hoping to discover what it is that seems to make this movie special and unique but I am sorry to say that I fail to see what's so great about this movie.

The story is simple. Baby (Jennifer Grey) is on holidays with her parents. She meets local dance teacher Johnny (Patrick Swayze), she learns the passions of dance while also learning a few things about love and life at the same time.

Undoubtedly the best thing about ... Read More:

VHS : Wilde [1997]
Everything said by other reviewers about Wilde, Fry and this production are perfectly correct. Wilde has been covered several times in the past and each production tries to portray this complex man according to the standards of the time it is made.

This production is no different. The BBC valiantly steers away from anything remotely genuinely sexual between the men. Which of course is what ruins the film. What is portrayed is largely wrong and the fact that Wilde was mostly involved on a platonic level is never properly developed. Why for example does the BBC always show him fully clothed in bed when his partner is naked? There is a need to dwell on the difference between lust and love between men and this just doesn't happen.

They prefer ... Read More:

VHS : The Towering Inferno [1975]
Due to an alleged stupid dispute between Warners and 20th Century Fox over who owns the UK rights to the Towering Inferno this magnificent 2 disc set is unavaible in the UK except on Region 1 import. But it is well worth the effort to get hold of one.
Beautifully packaged, with the main feature remastered and a host of fascinating extras, far to many to go into detail about on disc 2, plus a set of lobby cards, this is the ultimate Towering Inferno set and one that every fan of this classic disaster movie should own.

Bernadette of Lourdes [1962]

This is a beautiful retelling of St Bernadette of Lourdes, and Jenifer Jones was was well casted for the part of Bernadette, she plays the roll beuatifuly, you almost get the scence that she is actualy having the vision of the Virgin Mary. The scenery was also very well created. All this together created a very moving story over two hours long. Weather you are a beliver or not this film is brilient for anyone to watch. Well recomended.

VHS : Heartbreakers [2001]
This was a gem of a movie, built on what could have been a shaky premise: mother and daughter con-women finally outconned.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is impossibly sexy as the daughter, and Sigounrey Weaver sends herself up brilliantly. Anne Bancroft makes a lovely cameo as an older conwoman, and Ray Liotta is perfectly cast as the criminal link who won't take being conned and won't let the girls get away with it.

Lastly, Gene Hackman as the phlegmy dirty old man in the Rolls is positively disgusting, which is, I think, what he was trying to achieve.

A lovely, night-in film which is worth catching if you like romantic comedy and a bit of farce thrown in.

VHS : Portrait Of Jennie [1948]

To call this a 'Ghost Story' would be inappropriate because it isn't 'spooky' but rather sad - yet very beautiful too.

Probably one of the most beautiful and enchanting stories attributed to a dead person coming back to haunt the living in a very benign way. Jennifer Jones plays a child who 'stumbles' into the life of 'Eben Adams' (Joseph Cotton) and makes a wish that he will wait for her to 'grow up'. This story could not be done today for all its disgusting connotations of the modern societies obsession, but works beautifully for the period in which the movie is made. 'Eben' is visited by 'Jennie' periodically as she grows and matures in years, but is only a matter of days or weeks for 'Adams'. The shocking news for him is when he finds out quite by chance from an old nun that ... Read More:
