VHS : Babylon 5 - A Call To Arms [1999]
Babylon 5 is one of my all time favourite science fiction series and although this first season is not the best the series has to offer, it is still nothing less than enthralling and entertaining. This first season sees all the pieces moved into place for what is to follow and although there are some bumps along the way the show remains a cut above many other first Sci-fi first seasons. Season one is probably one of the more episodic of all the Babylon 5 seasons but despite this the arc plot that stretches throughout all five seasons is present and the writing that has done into the entire plot is far superior than that of many other series.

The show is also quite mature in its dealing with storylines, with themes that include ... Read More:

VHS : Babylon 5 - Vol. 20 - The Long, Twilight Struggle / Divided Loyalties [1994]
First of all, the two episodes are in the wrong order, but thankfully it does not affect the plot.

In the first episode, we witness the end of the Narn/ Centauri war. It is a powerful and dramatic episode, as the characters involved are played by forces beyond their reach. Mollari is trapped between his loyalty to his race and his obligations towards his dark allies; G'Kar foresees the danger, but pride and honour make his efforts fail. Meanwhile, Sheridan does his best to help the defeated Narn population, and he founds himself in command of unexpected allies.

A very powerful episode. Don't miss it.

In the second part, we see Lyta Alexander, the rogue telepath and the only known human who has ever seen a Vorlon, returning ... Read More:

The two final episodes of the second season are two of the best. In the first one, titled "Comes The Inquisitor', we see G'Kar struggling against enemies and kin alike in order to fight for his enslaved people. And when he lacks the trust of his own people he finds an ally where he least expected. Meanwhile, a strange human comes aboard Babylon 5. His mission is to determine whether Dellen and Sheridan are fit for the war ahead. He's a human saved by the Vorlons, a remnant of times long gone, and once known as "Jack".

I was speechless at the end of the episode. It's listed among my favourites.

In the next episode, we see a Narn warship coming to B5 for supplies and repairs. At the same time, Earth Dome signs up an agreement ... Read More:

NO COMPROMISES. This is the first episode of the fifth Babylon 5 season. Sheridan is ready to take over as President of the newly formed Interstellar Alliance, while B5 has a new Captain. But things can never go smooth for a change... A renegade war criminal from Earth Alliance is determined to assassin Sheridan. Meanwhile, a group of rogue telepaths asks for sanctuary in the station, led by a mysterious person named Byron. A thrilling episode that triggers the events of the telepath war.

THE VERY LONG NIGHT OF LANDO MOLLARI. He was sent to Babylon 5 as an ambassador, because no one else wanted the job. But in the last five years he became a hero to his people and a curse to the rest of the galaxy. Can deeds of the past be forgiven? No penance, no absolution ... Read More:

VHS : Babylon 5 - River Of Souls
When Babylon 5 was at it's height we took it for granted. We all think everything's going to last forever at some point. That's when Maxwell's 2nd law of thermodynamics kicks in - entropy. The inevitable decay of Babylon 5 had to come at some point. However, this is most certainly not it. It's a little ropey at times, not a patch on "In the Beginning", or the wonderous Season 3 - The Coming of the Shadows, but it has a certain feeling that the end is coming very soon. Even the characters speak of the end, of changes and you do get the feeling that the party is now officially over. The children have left the nest. I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to see a very attractive space Captain in a basque and suspenders or who has watched BBC TV's Lovejoy and wants ... Read More:

This episode takes place as a series of computer archive displays ranging in time periods of 2275 onwards for one million years.
It starts with the formation of the Alliance and the introduction of the rangers, moves on to an online university discussion, then to a holographic reproduction and a war. We then have an stark change of the timeline where things appear to digress before we are shown the person who operates the computer who leaves the room in a form that any fan will recognise.
The end of the episode moves back to the time of Babylon 5 that we have come to know as the present. Sheridan and Delenn are lying in bed and we Sheridan awake. He asks if people will remember them one hundred or a thousand years from now, was this question inspired by the dream ... Read More:

Two worth-watching episodes. The rather tedious story thread about the rogue telepaths moves towards its conclusion. At least it is handled with more grit and guts than the makers of "Star Trek" would have dared. And if one accepts the basic premise of the Brakiri religious festival of the "Day of the Dead" being enacted on the station then the whole thing becomes both entertaining and thought-provoking in what it reveals about characters and about the B5 universe.

THE PARAGON OF ANIMALS. G'Kar writes the declaration of principals for the new Alliance. However, no one seems willing to sign it. Meanwhile, a Ranger arrives at the station badly injured, carrying a SOS from a distant planet. Telepath Lyta Alexander enters the dying man's mind in order to find out the truth and sees him as he crosses over. This brings back memories, and we find out an interesting point of Bester's past: too many deathbed scans... Meanwhile, the SOS from that planet gives Sheridan a chance to prove that the Alliance is more than words, as he launches the White star fleet to aid those in need. And from the background, Byron's telepaths assist the new alliance in an unexpected way and Lyta finds in them a family she has long lost.

A VIEW FROM THE GALLERY. ... Read More:

Soul Mates: Where Mollari has the chance to divorce one of his wives. A joy to watch, this episode is filled with (a bit sinister) sense of humour.

A Race through Dark places: Here comes Bester again... This episode gives hints to Talia's hidden destiny. Too bad it was a dead end...

In the first episode, Ivanova tries to settle a traditional clan fight for leadership of the Draazi race. Meanwhile, the legendary Techno Mages arrive to the station, only to leave a short after for an unknown destination. Among the hints of the upcoming war and Mollari's trouble after insulting the Archmage, M.Mourcock's fans will be thrilled to hear the Archmage's name: Elrik. In the next episode we hear more of an unknown race and their huge, black ships. Captain Sheridan does his best to help an old friend after he has left for the unknown. "May the Gods stand between you and harm in all the dark places you must walk", he says, and the series moves closer to the Shadow War.
