these songs sound terrific remixed! Who better to do the remixing then Owen Bradley, who produced the original tracks. There are those who bemoan that the songs have been remixed, but the original versions are available in pristine form elsewhere. These are slight variations on the originals, and the result is a freshening up of the terrific performances. If you love Patsy Cline's music, you'll love this recording!

VHS : Hush [1997]
A well acted over the top film that feels as if it has been transported directly from a stage play.

Also the stifling relationship between Martha Baring (Jessica Lange) and her son Jackson (Jonathan Schaech) takes us back to the territory of Joan Crawford's dark dramas from the 1940s.

Jackson's new wife Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) is soon in contention with her husband's relationship with her mother-in-law, and this is fuelled by his grandmother Alice (in a fine cameo role by Nina Foch).

Well acted and directed by Jonathan Darby but whilst successfully creating the over integrated relationship between mother and son, it fails to rise above the pulp fiction standard of the screen play.

I have long been disgusted with copy-cat opinions about this excellent piece of popular cinema that has been sadly undervalued. Half the trouble is caused by people who have the received idea about it but can't quite remember whether they've seen it or not. The response to this film is a prime example of the 'cascade effect' known to sociologists, where a sort of chain reaction or 'snowball' effect is set up involving people with little genuine autonomy of opinion who would prefer to adopt ready made ones that seem to have currency.
The same applies to various other films such as Cimino's 'Heaven's Gate'. It is also what probably explains the corollary case where some execrable film or performance is met with approval and celebrity - for ... Read More:

VHS : The Postman Always Rings Twice [1981]
This is not the sort of film I like to watch and the first time I saw it it left a bad taste in my mouth and even made me bad-tempered. Except for the sex scene in the kitchen that is. That left me feeling awe and admiration. I was convinced from the start that here I was one of the finest things ever seen on film - a ten minute work of art in itself, comparable, on different grounds, to anything that Manny Farber had ever singled out from it's context.
Since then I have been compelled to admire the sheer craftsmanship with which the film is put together - it's tone, texture, pace, editing, acting, everything.
Anyone reasonably versed in literature could hardly fail to recognise that this is a re-working of 'Macbeth' and 'Therese Raquin' ... Read More:

VHS : Frances [1982]
Jessica Lange puts in a star turn as tragic starlet Frances Farmer in this touching feature. Frances Farmer, queen of the alkies and dreamers, was way ahead of her time as not surprisingly was detained in a madhouse at the word of mum. lange is clearly familiar with Farmer's material and style, and the harrowing scenes of Farmer's incarceration make this film, real, sad, and inspirational.
