VHS : Chutney Popcorn [1999]
There is, no doubt, an interesting story of family, sexuality and meeting of cultures struggling to get out of Nisha Ganatra's flat, meandering tale, but it's not one that the director is able to bring out for the viewer. Perhaps the film is trying to say something about motherhood, sisterhood, lesbianism, America, families with Indian roots, etc, but it's not easy to tell.

The story is about two sisters, one in a lesbian relationship, and the other recently married. When the married sister discovers she cannot conceive, the lesbian sister agrees to be a surrogate. The film begins passably but around the mid-way point, the narrative of this story gets completely lost. It is not that the plot has been turned on its head or anything, ... Read More:

VHS : Komodo [1999]
Despite some well respected actors (Jill Hennessy, Billy Burke), this film falls somewhat short of expectations. I so much wanted to rate this film with 5 stars, but in the end, I just couldn't. According to the blurb on the video cover, it tells the story of 15-year-old Patrick (Kevin Zegers) who has spent many long summers growing up on a small island - only on this holiday some kind of beast (which we later discover to be Komodo dragons) get a taste for human flesh and take his parents (and Buster, the family dog). Partick is orphaned and his grandmother hires a doctor (Hennessey) to help him get over the ordeal. The doc brings him back to the island to confront his fears, and everything goes horribly wrong...

I watched this film twice in one ... Read More:

VHS : Nuremberg
From late 1945 to early 1949, the Nazi assault on Europe was brought to closure with a spate of war crimes litigation, collectively known as the Nuremberg Trials. As an absolutely necessary vehicle for making the world comprehend the extent of Nazi barbarism, it was, in a sense, anticlimactic. After years of total war, with all its attendant death and destruction, the deliberations and speeches of judges and lawyers in a big room can hardly be considered otherwise. NUREMBERG, released as a U.S. television miniseries, depicts the first of twelve Nuremberg Trials, that one involving the legal prosecution and judgement of 21 members of the Nazi hierarchy: Goering, Speer, Kaltenbrunner, Jodl, Frick, von Schirach, Raeder, Hess, von Papen, Doenitz, Frank, Keitel, ... The movie starts with Seagal's character Boyd, a police officer, rescues the Vice President of the USA from a very elaborate plot. His reward is to demote him to the worst precinct, 15th, in the city. We lose what looks like the beginning of a good plot.

The 15th turns out to be a very seedy shop, with more corrupt cops than straight ones looks like our boy Boyd has arrived not a moment too soon. Isaiah Washington plays his awestruck partner, Jill Hennessy is his flinty boss, and hip-hop hero DMX is a mystery man who defeats Seagal in hand-to-hand combat. There is a lot of action, and Seagal fans will love it. The only extra on the DVD worth anything is the Music video; DMX's "Ain't No Sunshine"

This is the worst film I have seen in years! Winona Ryder is excrutiating, Gere looks like he wishes he was somewhere else, the script is dismal and predictable. What a waste of a rental. Avoid at all costs!

I first got told about this film by a mate. I watched it and was amazed. It was a shock. There are actors whose names you won't be familar with but faces most definently.

The plot is all to familar but although its like Enemy of the State (which also includes the guy who plays General Adam Woodward in this flick) the action in this is a bit better.

At the end of the day it is either this or Enemy of the State. If you prefer a big named movie then EotS is for you. If, however you like a movie that is jsut plain fun then look no further.

Mmmmmmm what good can you possibly say about a film that both bores and annoys in equal amounts?

"A Smile Like Yours" is the story of a happily married couple that are desperate to conceive and have a child. The wife sets out on a campaign of active seduction of her husband at the most inappropriate times and secretly take a sperm sample to her doctor for analysis. The husband agrees to enter a fertility clinic and after the cueing of many a "hilarious" scene featuring the extraction of sperm samples and internal examinations (oh how we chortled!) they are still without child. Adding to the problems is the beautiful female work colleague who seems intent on bedding the husband.

What we're not given during any of these farcical escapades is ... Read More:
