VHS : The Hanging Gale [1995]
Irish history - superbly written, & portrayed. Acting & actors really reflecting the determination & commitment to family during tremendous persecution by the English landowners.A heart-rending tale that everyone should see, to understand what Irish tenants had to fight for - to exist. FANTASTIC story, reflecting conditions in the 1800s, sad & very moving.

I have recently bought all three videos and I think they are all terrific. Especially video one. Charlie and Caroline are a great couple, well suited. I just love the programme. Tom. Jo and Laura are excellent as well. Everyone just seems to get on so well together.

VHS : Madame Bovary
A dark, paradoxical portrayal of a young woman who deludes herself with passion and grandeur, but married into an insipid life with a boring doctor, starts a string of affair which ultimately bankrupts and ruins her. I wanted to believe the heroine a passionate, independent, good person who only made the mistake of marrying the wrong man (as many do) but could only think her cruel and unkind to her devoted husband, vain, ignorant and very stupid. Frances O'Connor's performance was fluid and deserves no censure, but all in all, the film was very disappointing, and the soundtrack too satirical for my liking.

5.The Upper Hand - Vol. 2 - Caroline And Charlie's Romance starring: Joe McGann, Diane Weston, Honor Blackman, Kellie Bright, William Puttock

After the first hilarious series, i settled down to watch this with my cousins. I was bitterly disappointed with this offering from the team. We switched it off as soon as it started after watching Charlie fumbling his lines. Luckily for me I had just bought the box set of Keeping up appearances... And we all laughed for hours a Hyacinth and Emmett and a theatrical reproduction of 'the boyfriend' we all fell about, pure genius!!

What an incredibly funny, touching and heartwarming film. I had no idea that this happened during the war - and had to check to make sure it was a true story. Absolutely brilliant.
