VHS : Drowning By Numbers [1988]
Greenaway's films are always watchable for the cinematography, but in this one you can actually follow the story too. The plot is fairly simple but is padded out with descriptions of peculiar games that Madgett, the Suffolk coroner, and his strange son Smut invent to pass the time. Smut also celebrates any violent death (whether roadkill or drowned husbands) by painting a number at the scene and letting off fireworks. Yellow paint for Tuesdays, red paint for Saturdays (Tuesday is winning, being the best day for violent deaths). You can also try to count the ascending numbers from 1-100 that are placed in each scene. I only saw about half of them - some are well hidden.

There isn't a DVD version of the film available in the UK ... Read More:

VHS : 101 Dalmatians - Live Action (Disney) [1996]
I must confess that, as of writing this review, I have yet to see the animated Disney feature "101 Dalmatians". I really have to wonder, though, how Disney came to acquire the notion that making a live-action equivalent would be a good idea. But the result is certainly entertaining enough to stand for its own merits.

The story is the same as in the animated movie; that of fur-obsessed fashion guru Cruella DeVil stealing Dalmatian puppies from married couple Anita and Roger (Jolie Richardson and Jeff Daniels, the latter not even attempting to adopt an English accent), in order to make a coat out of them. If the law will not stop Cruella's plans in time, then the dogs will.

The star of the movie - asides from the dogs, of course, ... Read More:

VHS : Shining Through [1992]
This film is spectacularly awful. Let's get that straight from the off. Melanie Griffith proves once again that her performances in Something Wild and Working Girl were total flukes as she sleepwalks through this appalling piece of mis-casting. Captain Flappy-jowls, Michael Douglas, is equally bad but for different reasons - He seems to think he's in a good film (not the ludicrous cartoon this really is) and throws himself into badly written scenes with gay abandon and a recklessness that would be admirable if it weren't so misplaced. Having said all that, this is without a doubt one of the finest unintentional comedies ever made and a total laff-fest from start to finish. HIGHLY recommended. Double-bill it with John Badham's equally hilarious piece of junk, ... Read More:

VHS : Hollow Reed [1996]
This is an uncomfortably blunt and abrasive look at the way human beings handle themselves during emotional difficulties. Sam Bould is convincingly understated as Oliver, the 9 year old boy facing abuse and emotional neglect at the centre of his family's break-up and the subsequent battles between his mother, her partner, and his father. Ian Hart's humanity as the father's lover makes the film palatable, as he is frequently the only adult who seems able to confront his feelings. You end up at the end of the film wishing that he could be given sole custody of Oliver, because then you know that the boy would stand a chance.

VHS : Event Horizon [1997]

I watched this movie first time in telly about 6-7 years ago and have to add that it was after midnight. There was something in this movie that I could not stop watching it. It is a science fiction horror movie and there was absolutely dark in my room. All I want to say by that, there are a number of moments when I jumped scared. Now I will briefly introduce to this story.

Plot

Event Horizon is a secret project star ship. It Has BEEN equipped with experimental prototype of gravitons engine. Thanks that was able to create an artificial wormhole which bend time and space so travel from point to point lasted nothing (kind of inter-dimensional bridge). In 2040 sent to Neptune to get ready for its first jump to our nearest star system ... Read More:

VHS : Loch Ness [1996]
We loved this movie. We are going on holiday to Scotland and thought it would be a good idea to get a taste for the area that we are going to. The scenery in the film is superb and we have watched the film a couple of times since obtaining it. Its the kind of film you never tire of.

Of course the Loch Ness Monster story is a good one to adapt to a movie and you are pulled along with curiosity throughout the film - so wanting, really, for a monster to be found and of course the viewer is not disappointed.

We brought the video, mainly to find out more about the location, but we were touched by the storyline and its characters. The only sad thing is that most of the Scottish characters who take part in the movie are initially cast in a rather stony image and ... Read More:

VHS : Lady Chatterley [1993]
I bought this version because I had just seen the French adaptation by Pascale Ferran(which got many awards and the 'Cesar' award this year and which delighted me completely!) and I was suddenly curious (as I read the book) to see the British version of it. Especially as the two actors seemed familiar to me and as it was made by the BBC (it usually means the series or the drama is of good quality).
But I was very disappointed by this version. By episode 2, either I was bored or felt like laughing because some scenes were not very well-made. OK, I know I can't be objective (I've seen the French film and of course I like it very much) but I am going to do my best not to compare it to the French one.
One good point is that the two actors, Sean Bean and Joely Richardson ... Read More:
