VHS : Calendar Girls [2003]
This is a hugely enjoyable film that balances old-fashioned prejudices with daring activism. The WI girls join up to raise money for a sofa for the relatives' room, at the hospital where one of their husbands was treated for leukemia, by posing nude for a calendar. The delightful gung-ho of the girls (especially Helen Mirren's Chris) is tempered by the grief of Julie Walter's character as she misses and pays tribute to her late husband (a moving, lovely performance by John Alderton) and the knock-on effects on members of the womens' families.

Many hilarious scenes are juxtaposed with sad instances of prejudice, the dangers of exploitation and the constant spectre of cancer that both scares the women and spurs them on.

Brilliant..I normally dislike cricket because it is too slow. But this is filled with montages of best bowling, best batting, best run outs, best cock ups, all set to music. In between, Rory Bremner does a brilliant voice over job, turning events that were probably rather dull into hilarious events. I bought this for my 11 year old son, and the whole family has watched it over and over!

VHS : The Tailor Of Panama [2001]
I've watched and enjoyed "The Taylor of Panama" several times now. It seems to represent co-producer John Le Carré's homage to Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, and a spoof on the spy genre-film in general (It even includes a humorous pot-shot at "Casablanca.").

Geoffrey Rush turns in a moving performance as Harry Pendel, the tailor, whose fantasy life makes him all too vulnerable for the enticements and blackmail of the seedy would-be, but never-actually-was, James Bond--Andrew Osnard, a burnt-out MI-Sixer, banished to Panama as a punishment for peccadilloes in foreign postings [Pierce Brosnan does an engaging satire on his cinematic Bond aplomb.]. Between the fantasies of Pendel (whose dead but not-so-silent partner is portrayed by ... Read More:

These videos are brilliant not only for the quality of animation but for the insight they provide into middle English, the vestiges of which may still be seen (heard) in the dialects of the North East and East coast of Scotland (two places with which I have connnections). Perhaps by watching these videos (the middle English versions) you will be able to identify certain words/phrases which still exist in your local parlance.
Fascinating.

VHS : England, My England - The Story Of Henry Purcell [1995]
Purcell, who was court composer to King Charles the Second (The Merry Monarch) and later to William III and Queen Mary II, is probably one of England's greatest composers and this wonderful production was very well received when it was on TV to mark his 300 year anniversary.

This is not just a beautifully played biography of Purcell, which Michael Ball portrays as a lovable, talented man, but also a moving and realistic depiction of the considerably harsher lives of those in London at that time.

The drama is balanced in three parts to involve the viewer in the music, the life of Purcell in the late 1600's and how to relate to him in the present day. Thus the drama of Purcell's life is done in flashback from Simon Callow ... Read More:

Before watching this I never imagined that clay models could bring Chaucer's epic to life. Thank goodness I was persuaded to watch!

Despite being so short these mini versions of the tales totally bring them to life, both in modern and Chaucer's English.

Whatever the age group this version will grip.
