VHS : The Beatles - Yellow Submarine [1968]
In my case that was 1969. That's when I saw this in a double billing with Barbarella (1968) at West Point, NY.

The music is great and it brings back a part of history. Can the Beatles save Pepperland? Remember we all live in a Yellow Submarine. Instead of just buying the soundtrack, buy the movie and you have them both. I guess I will have to buy it also to hear "Hey, Bulldog!" Of course as with most movies there will always be someone one that prefers the original and knows that it was cut that way on purpose.

And now it is time for a whole new generation to enjoy.

As a 32 year old Beatle fan returning to watch this film this after 15 years or so I am a little less disappointed than I was when I first saw it. I feel this film gets better with age just as Help gets worse. I appreciate things about it that I just thought were a waste of footage before, really, and now like it for what it is. It was disappointing originally because there is no story to draw you in, the ad libing is not that funny or developed, it is rambling and very short. But then that said a lot about my rigid expectations. If one is more open minded and has other ways of seeing one can see that this film is partially successful.
I've never watched this under the influence of drugs but I can see how it would beautifully compliment ... Read More:

"Help!" is not actually the worst film ever made. There are several candidates for that: I would nominate "Easy Rider", "Funny Games" (both the original and the remake), "Ocean's Eleven" (again, both the original and the remake), "Star Trek V" (the one Shatner directed), anything by Lina Wertmuller, practically everything by Guy Ritchie...

But it's not very good. The original idea might have been better. Originally, Ringo was supposed to find out that he was terminally ill, whereupon he would hire a contract killer to off him before he died of natural causes, but then he would find out that he wasn't terminally ill after all, and the rest of the film would have been about his efforts to call off his own assassination...with, presumably, ... The reviewer who claims that this film was originally made in 4:3 format is quite wrong. Perhaps he means the original video, which was certainly cut to fit a standard TV. But this good DVD is correctly formatted, and nothing has been cut off from the top or bottom.

That having been said, this is a very comprehensive set. The 36' documentary with reminiscences of the film's crew is fun and enlightening. One comes away with the feeling, as if we couldn't guess from the film itself, that spirits were high (pardon the expression) and everyone felt this would be something special.

The remastering here is quite good, tho perhaps not quite Criterion quality. The sound seems just a bit flat, and is much fuller in the restored WS Help! ... Read More:

Evidently this is supposed to be some sort of black comedy. Unless you like keystone cops, there is not much comedy; it is more of a surrealistic missing of the mark.

Michael Crawford "A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum" (1966), is supposed to be some sort of inept WWII officer. This film is full of colorful characters (painted red, blue and whatever).

There are a lot of noisy overlapping claptrap and gobbledygook statements. It is unique enough not to be anything. The only thing missing are the Muppets.

You would be much better off watching "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" (1966) It has a moral and redeeming social value.
