VHS : Breaking Glass [1980]
Lovely punkette chanteuse Hazel O'Connor plays a blinder in the somewhat autobiographic role of Kate, desperate to succeed, whilst maintaining her ethics, in the cut-throat music business.

Hazel's brilliant songs are enough to recommend this movie in its own right but, unlike some musicals, Breaking Glass is far more than just a vehicle to promote the artiste's work. The sense of unease stoked by the rise of neo-Nazi and anarchic groups in late 70's/early 80's urban England and the shadier side of the music industry are expertly recreated here.

Furthermore, Hazel's depiction of the roller-coaster rise to stardom, resulting in mental breakdown, is impeccably observed. Why this hugely talented woman's career as an actress ... Read More:

VHS : Lady Caroline Lamb [1980]
Lady Caroline Lamb's great claim to immortality is that she coined the phrase "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" about Lord Byron. This film is largely about their brief but tempestuous affair, which scandalised Regency high society, although the scandal was mainly that they weren't as discreet about it as they should have been! Sarah Miles is perfectly cast as the highly-strung, irrational aristocrat, a girl far too high-spirited for the polite society she had to live in. It's a difficult, and sometimes humiliating role, but she carries it off with great style. Richard Chamberlain brings almost nothing to the role of Lord Byron, other than pouting a lot and the occasional bit of sneering. He looks suitably dashing though, and I guess they ... Read More:

VHS : Macbeth [1971]
Picture this: Circa 1975, A class of 32 bored, inner city school, O level English kids, dragged off to an arts cinema to see a showing of Polanski's Macbeth. We settled down for a boring couple of hours messing about and talking. Five minutes into the film, you could have heard a pin drop. We were hooked.
We went from complete disinterest, to shakespeare fans in one afternoon. I will always be grateful to that young english teacher (whatever her name was?) for igniting a lifelong interest in literature. If our Headmaster/parents had known what we were going to see, I'm sure the trip would never have happened! But the quality of acting was such, that suddenly we all knew and understood olde worlde english, something which carried on through ... Read More:

VHS : Frenzy [1972]
This is an excellent view of showing how a simple crime can be hideously misinterpreted leading to a gross miscarriage of justice .

The observations of people from their aspects can lead to huge errors is beutifully borne out by the clever script .

The various perspectives sound very logical yet we know the wrong man is being implicated as the serial killer but hitchcock wants us to derive at the final conclusion -is circumstantial evidence ever enough to accuse and convict a person .

He has intelligently answered the query and left us to make our own conclusions regarding the controversial issue.

There is a typically humoresque subplot about the merits of marital life and the culinary delights of french ... Read More:

This is a nostalgia trip for me as I saw them when they were first shown on tv in 1980.
This video contains one of my 2 favourite episodes.
WITCHING TIME. Jon Finch plays a music writer. He's composing at his isolated farmhouse when a witch from the 17th century appears(brilliantly played by Patricia "Rocky Horror" Quinn. The scene where Finch shows her how to turn on a light switch for the first time is great.Quinn has some nude scenes in this. Sounds corny but it's high quality and very effective.
MARK OF SATAN . Peter Mcenery is very effective as a young man who thinks he's been infected by an evil virus. He becomes paranoid and see's the number 9 in almost everything.Genuinely disturbing. Also great performance by Georgina Hale.

VHS : Darklands [1997]
Surprisingly diverting horror thriller, set in South Wales and prompting a terrific performance from Cliffhanger's Craig Fairbrass as a reporter lured into a mire of pagan rituals and the occult by svelte 'trainee journalist' Rowena King. Before he knows it, he's up to his elbows in pigs blood and human sacrifices. The pace builds relentlessly till his caught - literally - on a one-way train to hell and damnation. Black as coal!

VHS : The Final Programme [1973]
This is based on the novel by Michael Moorcock.

Like most films of the book there had to be compromises.

The main issue I see with the film is that it feels empty - there are very few people around.

Since the climax of the book is the birth of a fully-formed hermaphrodite all-purpose human being and the mass suicide of Europe's population in the sea (after a triumphal procession), this was always going to be a problem in getting the transfer to the screen right. Also there is a lot more depth in the book. All we have here is a prolonged chase between the Cornelius brothers, a couple of shootouts and then the denouement in the mad scientists' lair. Oh, and a bout of vampirism.

The exposition with the faux Hindu is out of ... Read More:
