VHS : Doctor Who - Planet Of The Spiders [1974]
Every time I watch this one, it starts off superb but then by episode four it starts to collapse. Patrly because the Metebelis Three people are so stupid and can't act. There are mostly good speical effects all along, and the regeneration is fairly standard, but female spiders?

VHS : Doctor Who - The Day Of The Daleks [1972]
The ninth season of Doctor Who opened with a group of guerillas from earth in the twenty-third century, travelling back three hundred years in time. Their mission is to assassinate a British diplomat and sabotage a peace process. They believe that by doing so, they can prevent a great terror in the future.
The Daleks return to Doctor Who after a five year absence. This is an enjoyable, if not classic, adventure from Pertwee's era. Pertwee and the regulars are all on fine form. A special mention must go to Aubrey Woods for a memorable strong performance as the Controller in the future earth, who must wrestle with his conscience. This was also the story which introduced the brutal Ogrons.
There are some disappointments. The Dalek ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - Doctor Who And The Silurians
This is Jon Pertwee's second outing as Doctor Who. It is a good story with some fine performances. Pertwee has comfortably settled into the part, and the two other regulars Nicholas Courtney and Caroline John, give fine strong support. There are also some notable guest appearances from Fulton MacKay, Peter Miles and watch out for a young Geoffrey Palmer.
The silurians are interesting characters, as they are not actually evil, they just believe that the planet is theirs and that mankind is a threat to them. The doctor, with the help of an older silurian, aims (unsuccessfully) to be peacemaker between mankind and the creatures.
The story is a good one with some genuinely frightening moments, in particular when the silurians release ... Read More:

jon pertwee was great as the doctor. and this is a good story to watch to see just how good he is.

well, the 7 episode stories might be overlong for some, but this story keeps pace and interest through every episode.

the plot is very complex, with all the aliens being substituted for humans and stuff. when i first saw this story i was a bit confused by what was going on, but now im older and this story is brilliant. one of the best jon pertwee stories and one of the best full stop.

oh and i like it that caroline john gets to do some decent stuff for a change. and she sure is a great runner!!

actually not too many special effects on this story, but this aint a bad thing at all. in fact, it makes it ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - Terror Of The Autons - 30th Anniversary - 1963-93 - Full Reconstructed Colour Version [1971]
Having recently read Doctor Who Magazine's 'Fact of Fiction' feature on this story, I was compelled to revisit it. Dusting down my copy I poured a glass of wine and settled down to see if time had been kinder to this than it has to many Doctor Who serials from Jon Pertwee's tenure. Happily I discovered that it had - the introduction of The Master provided what was to become the greatest fictional rivalry since Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty; Jo Grant's comedic turn as the Doctor's ditzy new assistant was an instant success and the return of the sinister and malevolent Autons provided the icing on the cake. Particular highlights must include the evil doll waking and attacking the factory boss, The Master's killer chair, the Autons in carnival heads distributing the deadly ... Read More:

This is a follow up to one of the most popular stories in the Pertwee era! Back with John in this documentary are Captain Yates, Benton and the Brig, this is a absolute must for any fan of the Doctor who world and is great for a present too!!!!

VHS : Doctor Who: The Master Tin Set - Colony In Space / Time Monster
Personally I think these two stories are long overdue for DVD release. Whilst the earlier reviewer's comments about the quality of the stories are mostly true, I think that they're missing the point - as with much late sixties and early seventies 'Who' there IS a lot of padding, however, there is also a decent amount of dialogue, and interplay between the characters that is generally missing in today's high-speed, action-oriented Doctor Who.
The (mostly) Earthbound Doctor and his UNIT colleagues have formed a tight-knit group by this stage in the series, and there is some particularly amusing badinage between The Doctor and The Brigadier and the latter and Sergeant Benton in `The Time Monster'. In one memorable scene The Brig sneers at The Doctor's yellow Edwardian ... Read More:

Yes, this is a fantastic serial. I actually enjoyed it more than 'Terror of the Autons' or 'Day of the Daleks'. IMO the only real clunker of Jon Pertwee's final season was 'Monster of Peladon'.

The dinosaur's are obviously fake like many of the old creatures and like much of modern day CGI work. That doesn't get in the way of the story or action; and personally I think they are more effective in colour than and black and white.

Hopefully soon the first episode will be restored to colour and the whole thing released on DVD.

VHS : Carry On Cleo [1964]
Everyone seems to rate this film highly, but it is not the best of the 'Carry On's' by far. True it probably is the most lavish, and true, it contains one of the best one liners, in the often quoted 'Infamy, Infamy, they have all got it in for me', but it truly has little else to commend it. Of the historical romps 'Carry on Henry' is funnier, but for the true classics we have to turn to 'Carry on Screaming', Carry on Camping','Carry on up the Khyber', and 'Carry on Don't Lose Your Head', all of which are vastly superior.

VHS : Ladies Who Do [1963]
A wonderful, classis comedy in the Boulting Brothers / Ealing Studios mould. Good strong characterisation, an engaging story line and the whole enriched immeasurably by the peerless Robert Morley.
