VHS : Brother Sun, Sister Moon [1973]
I was living in Perugia, just 20 minutes from Assisi, when I saw this film for the first time. I knew nothing about it, and as it was a boring weekend, I went to see it on Friday night. For the life of me, I have no idea how many times I watched the film, I was at every showing that weekendm with only brief breaks for dinner.
The title derives from a poem Francis wrote, the Hymn of the Creation. In the original Italian it read "Beato sia per fratello sole, beato sia per sorella luna", cut down a little. In English, "Praise the Lord for Brother Sun, Praise the Lord for Sister Moon".
I think this film works better in Italian, even thought it was written in English. There is something about the beauty of the Italian language which is ... Read More:

VHS : Sins - Vols. 1 And 2 [1986]
The '80s were the era of the miniseries - big name (for TV anyway) stars, theme songs by well-known singers, international locations - it was all there. The miniseries was the visual form of the blockbuster novel, a genre that seems sadly lost to all us TV junkies now. The classics of this wickedly enjoyable genre included "Lace", "Hollywood Wives", "Deceptions", "Scruples" - and "Sins". Only the latter has been released on glossy DVD - so far - and you should lap it up while it is available.

"Sins" is a perfect example of classy trash. Starring then TV queen Joan Collins, this slickly produced sudser features an incredible all-star cast, a deliciously implausible story, exotic and beautiful locations, and a record 85 costumes changes ... Read More:

VHS : Clash of the Titans [1981]
There's only one reason I watch this film (or portions of it) again and again.

It's not the special effects of Harryhausen which are pretty variable in quality (my favorite is Medusa, my least favorite is that damn owl).

It's not the story which flows well enuf except for the tendency to draw out the special effects scenes (as with all Harryhausen films).

It's not the major British stars (eg, Olivier typecast as Zeus) languishing on Mt Olympus, drawing paychecks.

It's not the Americans Hamlin or Burgess, altho they do very well.

It's the heartbreakingly beautiful and talented Judi Bowker (as Andromeda) in one of her few film roles. She has a reasonable amount of screen time. And she was ... Read More:

I used to watch this show faithfully as a child. We didn't get it here in the states until the early 80's and I loved it from the very start. Wonderful heartfelt stories with superb acting help teach children the valuable lesson of kindness. The beautiful english countryside helps lend a magical quality allowing you to easily escape to a distant time and place. I'm thrilled to see it available again and will surely be adding this jewel of a series to my DVD collection. Highly recommended!!

VHS : The Adventures Of Black Beauty - The Best Of Series Two [1972]
This DVD is rated as PG which is well founded as the fourth episode is scary and will give children nightmares if watched before bedtime. This is not the film but a series based very losely on the classic book.
If you have seen ther first DVD or it on TV Black Beauty is owned by a loving family and has many adventres.
The pilot does show Black Beauty beaing abused but as you can tell Black Beauty is saved and finds a home and loving owners
Six episodes on one disc is a good amount and this series is the better than the book with a girl owning Black Beauty and not some stuck squire's son like in the book.

An melancholy look at the world of England's landed gentry a year before the war they once called the Great War, a world that will never exist again. Moving, but not a happy film.
