VHS : Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe [1991]
No matter how many times I watch this film, the charm of it's excessive sentimentality never fails to draw me in. This film is engaging and warm-hearted, bringing us into the life of Evelyn, a gentle and good-natured Southern woman who is going through the menopause, played by Kathy Bates. After going with her husband to a local retirement home to visit one of his relatives, Evelyn meets and befriends an elderly woman named Mrs. Threadgoode, played by Jessica Tandy.

The way in which the film seamlessly flits between past and present is admirable. After befriending each other, the two woman share the details of their lives, and Evelyn learns of the stories of Mrs. Threadgoode's various family members, from long ago, in a tiny little ... Read More:

VHS : Misery [1991]
On the one hand, Misery is an excellent film. Many - if not all - of the characters are well cast, and very true to the book.

However, it has far less depth than the novel. For example, the book being written inside the book/film actually has a great deal of reference to the situation the author finds himself in, obviously basing the book around his life as Annie Wilkes' hostage.

In summary, read the book first. The film is pretty epic on its own, but it could have been so much better with the addition of a few extra scenes depicting the content of the novel being written, which would have shown more of Annie Wilkes' persona and added a great deal of irony to the situation.

Still, buy it.

VHS : Amy Foster aka Swept From The Sea [1998]
Took me ten years to catch this film had no idea what I had missed.
The film was given to me because of my deep love of Cornwall, in truth I would watch just about any old tripe if it included shots of the Cornish coast I love so dear. This coast has been an inspiration for artists for centuries. On a visit to Cornwall an inspired Richard Wagner wrote the greatest opera ever written - Tristan and Isolde.

Joseph Conrad in his story Amy Foster was at his most insightful. It is largely a story about 'difference' and how a shipwrecked stranger can be treated with hostility by the local community to the point where this endangers his life, Conrad was himself a polish immigrant to England. Amy, for quite diverse reasons is also an ... Read More:

VHS : Dolores Claiborne [1995]
Who is Dolores ? - a greedy monster and a murderer or an unhappy woman for whom an accident is sometimes a best friend? Kathy Bates received the Oscar for her portrayal of a psychotic nurse in another King's adaptation, "Misery" but I believe that Dolores Claiborne is her best role. She carries the film and I don't think that any other actress could fit the part as well as Bates did which brings the question - maybe King wrote the book with her in mind, who knows? Judy Parfitt is extremely well cast as Vera Donovan, an arrogant ice queen, who was capable of understanding and care for Dolores and her daughter and who knew too well about loneliness and despair. David Strathairn deserves high praise for his Joe St. George, Dolores's abusive husband and Selena's ... Read More:

VHS : At Play In The Fields Of The Lord [1991]
This movie has an unusually deep moral sense. It also has an unusual respect for each of its characters, including the Indians - and the jungle.

I finally read the book a few years ago and loved it. The movie somehow was able to convey a similar feeling despite not being able to delve into the thoughts of the characters in the way that the book did. These are two closely related but fully independent works of art. It's rare to find a book and its movie that complement each other so well. Great writing on the one hand, great acting on the other.

Because the Indians are treated with respect, even though they are clearly playing roles that fit perfectly into the movie, this movie seems to reveal more about them than any documentary I've seen. ... Read More:
