VHS : Brother Sun, Sister Moon [1973]
I was living in Perugia, just 20 minutes from Assisi, when I saw this film for the first time. I knew nothing about it, and as it was a boring weekend, I went to see it on Friday night. For the life of me, I have no idea how many times I watched the film, I was at every showing that weekendm with only brief breaks for dinner.
The title derives from a poem Francis wrote, the Hymn of the Creation. In the original Italian it read "Beato sia per fratello sole, beato sia per sorella luna", cut down a little. In English, "Praise the Lord for Brother Sun, Praise the Lord for Sister Moon".
I think this film works better in Italian, even thought it was written in English. There is something about the beauty of the Italian language which is ... Read More:

VHS : Why Didn't They Ask Evans? [1980]
A golf game on a windy bluff above the sea, a cry, a man lying on the rocks below who struggles to say with his dying breath, "Why didn't they ask Evans?" And we're off on a three-hour Agatha Christie tale of family deception, murder, lies and ruthless intrigue. We're also thrust into the Twenties and early Thirties' world of wealthy English bright young things, a world of upper-crust accents, immaculate manners and immaculate croquet grounds, country homes with many rooms and even more servants, and gleaming autos almost as long as a cricket pitch.

This TV movie, originally a three-part British television production, would seem to have everything. So why is it unsatisfying? And why, as unsatisfying as I think it is, is it still ... Read More:

VHS : Agatha Christie's Murder Is Easy [1982]
You know those made for TV programs that are written up the day before with no thought but to put something between commercials? Well this is one of them. They are just luck that Agatha Christy is dead already or they would be suspected in her heart attack.

This has all the element you need to make murder easy. Sick sophomoric background music courtesy of Gerald Fried who did the music for "Rescue from Gilligan's Island". A camera than can not focus on close-ups. Dialog that was pulled out of the hat. Arrows that point at the obvious (Well a camera that closes in and waits for you to see the obvious). The standard suspects are not even suspect enough. And that great statement "It is the last person you suspect"

7.Percy's Progress starring: Leigh Lawson, Elke Sommer, Denholm Elliott, Judy Geeson, Harry H. Corbett
directed by: Ralph Thomas

VHS : Tess [1979]
I first saw Tess when it was originally produced in 1979 and was immediately impressed with not only the Polansky film but also Thomas Hardy,s writing.
I have since read all of his novels and poems and to my mind he is the best english author at setting scenes and describing the countryside and the harsh way of life that prevailed in the 19th and early 20th century.
This is a film that one can watch again and again and still be moved by the plight of Tess.
I would recommend this and all Hardy novels to everyone.
I know that he is perceived as a pessamist but you only have to see read Tess to see that the English way of life that she lived is gone forever, and only by Hardy,s novels will future generations be able to learn what ... Read More:
