VHS : Priest [1994]
this was my first gay film and managed to stay on top of my favorites.

The lead actor did a terrific job portraying a priest who is torn between his "duties" and homosexuality.

hey, at least his lover was an adult unlike most of the highly publicized real life scandals with children.

One of the best, if not THE best Drama I have ever seen! I just had to buy the video when it first came out! By the end of the 6 episodes you feel overwhelmed by emotions and it gets me everytime I watch it. Superbly written, excellent acting, brilliant!!

VHS : Great Expectations [1999]
This edition is technically not great. The DVD mastering is quite awful and is very grainy indeed. However....

This is so good. Having admired David Lean's rather compressed version of Dickens' superb novel for many years and having endured the complete annihilation of the said novel in the abhorrent farrago starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, it is an absolute joy to witness the sheer quality of realisation in this production. It vastly outclasses the other productions on every level although the Lean has great nostalgic charm and appeal. Relatively faithful to the novel, this is profoundly engaging. The acting is superb.Charlotte Rampling inhabits the character of Miss Havisham at a stellar level, evoking a sympathetic response to ... Read More:

VHS : Naked [1993]
I cannot for the life of me understand all the 5 star reviews. This film comprises a rediculously unbelieveable script populated with unbelieveable, 2-dimensional, cliched characters and executed with heavy, wooden performances. Is this what happens when artistic folk conspire to create "gritty" and "real" drama. The total running time of nearly two and a half hours makes this ham-fisted effort almost unwatchable

An extraordinary contemporary tale of parental love, hetero & homosexual love & eco-passion.

Superb acting all around.

And ultra-gorgeous cinematography to go with it.

The script is simply magnificent!

VHS : The Full Monty [1997]
I'd heard the hype but only watched the film as my wife wanted to see it.There is a lot of bad language in it but that is the make up of the characters in the film. The film reflects the steel industry failing in the UK and the impact it has on the workers losing their jobs.Far from being depressing,as you may expect,it handles the issues with classic comedy and genuine humour. It runs for almost 90 mins, grabs your attention from the first minute and keeps you laughing all the way through with only the odd short-lived serious moment.Don't let the swearing put you off,i was quite happy to let my 16 year old daughter watch and enjoy the film.It is the humour that stays with you.Recommended.

VHS : Close My Eyes [1991]
I adored both Shooting The Past and Perfect Strangers but have found Poliakoff's recent work to be rather disappointing, particularly Friends and Crocodiles. I was therefore interested to watch this drama.

Close My Eyes reminded me a lot in style of another recent work Gideon's Daughter and, as with that drama, the story never really gripped or involved me and the characters lacked credibility to my mind. I found it hard to believe that Clive Owen's character would be the type to become obsessed with his sister given his confident nature and obvious attraction to women. I would have found it more likely if his sister had been the one out of control since her character seemed more depressive and lacking in self worth. Alan Rickman's character, Spencer, I found ...
