VHS : Who Will Love My Children [1983]
This is a film about a mother who discovers she has inoperable cancer and has to find good homes for all her many children. Her husband, though well-meaning, is a hopeless drunkard totally unable to cope or to help much. They live in a house far from town, somewhere in "Darkest America", I think Iowa or Michigan (not sure about that). The story takes one up and down, through all sorts of trauma and eventually comes up with as happy an ending as possible under the trying circumstances. The last ten minutes keep you guessing as it seems one child (quite normal save for mild epilepsy) looks like being abandoned alone in a state orphanage...this is a 5-star tearjerker and a half! Great film though and not schmaltzy at all, really, bearing in mind ... Read More:

VHS : Young At Heart [1954]
Just wait for the scene when Frank Sinatra arrives at the front door. Doris Day answers. She sees the back of a man's head. He slowly turns around. We saw gaunt, cutaway cheekbones. Then a pair of blue eyes. It's love, but not without its twists and turns and near tragedies.

Yes, I'm in love with this film. It seems fluffy and light-hearted on the surface but there's some serious melancholy going on.

VHS : Take The Money And Run [1968]
"Take the Money and Run" is an absolutely hilarious Woody Allen film, done in a quasi-documentary style, about a career criminal, Virgil Starkwell, who has a very unsuccessful career. His prison breaks don't go as planned, his robberies are a disaster and usually coincide with someone else's robbery of the same place, and his planning of a job would be fine if only he weren't talking to the police in the booth behind him. One nice perk of failure: while attempting to rob a young woman's purse, he falls in love with her (Janet Margolin). Virgil does admit at one point thinking of foregoing robbery and taking up a career in singing. He doesn't mention the cello, which gave him his start in music - and crime.

This is one of those laugh ... Read More:
