VHS : Laurel And Hardy - Their First Mistake / Brats / Twice Two - Restored Version [1932]
Up until now I have only ever seen Laurel and Hardy in Black and White. These colour films are a great new experience. You appear to see much more detail.

"Their First Mistake" is the first film on the tape. My favourite part is when the lights go out and Ollie trips and makes an awful noise and wakes the baby and the neighbourhood.

The next story "Brats" is unusual as Stan and Ollie play their own children as well as themselves. The "kids" look just like Laurel and Hardy in a giant's house!

"Twice Two" is my favourite of the three. This time the boys play each other's wives as well as themselves. One of funniest scenes is when Stan's wife (Fanny) gets a cake on her head and she looks like the old picture ... Read More:

Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy sneak off to a fraternal convention, without telling their wives. Of course, they have some explaining to do when they come home. This has the strongest story values of any Laurel & Hardy feature, and the very funny situations are enhanced by the comedians' expert timing and pantomime skills. Very amusing, indeed, and great fun for Laurel & Hardy fans.

Volume 8 of this marvellous set of DVD's contains only short films. I haven't watched the whole DVD yet, but based on the 3 films I've seen it only confirms my view that L&H are the greatest comedy double act in history.

'Early to Bed' is the weakest of the three. A 1928 silent where their traditional roles are reversed. Stan is the butt of most jokes. Whether this is because their characters were not yet fully developed, or it was simply a one-off, I don't know, but it certainly doesn't work as well.

'Love 'em and weep' is a pre-teaming ealy silent (1927) which primarily features Stan Laurel, Mae Busch and James Finlayson. Oliver Hardy only has a minor role. Still its an entertaining short film and Finlayson is always worth watching ... Read More:

'Come Clean' was realesed just after their first feature film 'Pardon Us' in 1931 and is a 5 star 20 minute short. The Hardys are having a pleasent night together but get disturbed by the Laurels knocking at their door. When the Laurels pop in Stan (the thin one) asks if he can have some ice cream. The Hardys do not have any so Ollie (the fat one) with Stan goes out to buy some. On their way back from causing havock at the ice cream shop they see a woman trying to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge into a river. Stan and Ollie (with difficulty) manage to save her from dying and when she wakes up she said "Now that you have saved me you'll have to take care of me or I will scream and tell the world that you tried to kill me".
