VHS : Melody (1971)
A tale of teen (or rather pre-teen) love. In a very traditional school in England (where corporal punishment is still practiced), a boy and a girl (both about twelve) fall in love. Relatively realistic during most of its running time, during the final twenty minutes it falls into anarchist fantasy, as the children in the school thwart the attempts of the parents and the school masters to prevent their elopement and marriage. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't watch this as a child: it's not filtered by childhood memories, so I think I can judge it better as a movie. It's a good romantic story, sometimes demagogic, sometimes overwrought in its criticisms of traditional England, but it's still irresistible. The actress playing the girl, the beautiful ... One year after the blockbuster Oliver, Mark Lester is given this role as a boy who is mute or has lost the ability to speak since birth. Distanced from his parents (a mother who is unable to love him and a father who has lost patience) the boy befriends a white horse on the moors and follows it everywhere. John Mills encourages the young boy and becomes a fatherly figure showing him the beautiful wild countryside and moors and the animals that live there. Watch out for a young Fiona Fullerton. The film really plods along apart from one or two incidents before it builds to a climax where the horse falls into a bog and they struggle to pull it out, the young boy shocked and upset saves the day by uttering the horses name and shouts for it to get up. Really it was a platform ... Read More:

AVOID!AVOID!AVOID! THIS IS A SHOCKING ADAPTATION OF A CLASSIC TALE. OK, ITS GOING TO BE COMPARED TO THE 1963 FILM WHICH RANKS AS ONE OF THE GREAT FANTASY EPICS BUT NEVER THE LESS ITS APPALLING!
THERE IS LITTLE SENSE OF EPIC OR THE FANTASTIC TO BE FOUND HERE - THE FILM CRAWLS AT A SNAILS PACE AND SO CALLED SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE DREADFUL. LOW GRADE CGI WORK IS OFTEN WORSE THAN STOP MOTION ANIMATION AS CLEARLY SEEN HERE. THESE CGI FX ARE ON THE LEVEL OFTEN USED IN DOCUMENTARIES SHOWN ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC (NO DISRESPECT). DONT EXPECT CUTTING EDGE REBOOTS OF RAY HARRYHAUSEN'S ICONIC MONSTERS. THERE IS NO TALOS, THE 100 FOOT PLUS BRONZE GIANT AT ALL! THE LEGENDARY SKELETON SCENE IS REPLACED WITH SOME KIND OF BADLY RENDERED WARRIORS THAT SEEM TO BE MADE OF BARK/EARTH - THEYD ... Read More:

A good film to watch on a wet Sunday afternoon. An exceellent cast of actors including Oliver Reed,Ernest Borgnine, George C Scott, Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison with Raquel Welch adding the glamour element. A film full of frivolity, action and some humour in which you can escape. It compares (possibly because Ollie Reed and Raquel Welch star) with The Musketeers and Man in the Iron Mask so if you like this sort of film then this is one to watch. Its an old story with "old" actors but very well made and enjoyable!

Once again Anchor Bay have released a rare film and have pulled out all the stops. The print is excellent with no print damage and is presented in the original 1.66 aspect ratio. There is also a very intersting audio commentary track with the director John Hough and executive producer Bryan Forbes.

This is a British film set on the island of Malta and the basic plot concerns a young boy (who has the habit of crying wolf rather alot) who witnesses an assasination by a couple of policemen. Of course no one believes him. Only the killers know he saw them and now need to silence him forever....

This film reminds me of a cross between a Italian Giallo film and an Alfred Hitchcock film because of the suspence and fairly graphic violence. The cast is excellent and includes ... Read More:
