VHS : A Streetcar Named Desire [1951]
As a playwright, Tennessee Williams was to the South what William Faulkner was as a fiction writer: a creative genius who revolutionized not only the region's arts scene and literature but that of 20th century America as a whole, bringing a Southern voice to the forefront while addressing universally important themes, and influencing and inspiring generations of later writers.

Pulitzer-Prize-winning "A Streetcar Named Desire" dates from the peak of Williams's creativity, the period between 1944 ("A Glass Menagerie") and 1955 ("Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," his second Pulitzer-winner). After its successful 1947 run on Broadway, "Streetcar" was adapted into a screenplay by Williams himself for this movie produced and directed by Elia Kazan, ... Read More:

VHS : Julius Caesar [1953]
I have been raised on this play and saw many versions. I have had the real story pointed out to me and meaning behind many of the words explained. However it is this adaptation that brought it to life not just intellectually but emotionally.

One of the first things you notice is the setting is a balance between stage and reality. This film being in black and white may have contributed to the atmosphere.

The actors are not just popular names but are able to bring the characters to life. I was impressed with everyone's ability to the point that it took time to realize that Mark Antony is Marlon Brando; he among others is able to make the words real and meaningful, not just a bunch of Shakespearian phrases.

VHS : Apocalypse Now / Hearts of Darkness Documentary Box Set [1979]
Much has been documented about the mental breakdown of Coppola when directing modern war epic Apocalypse now. The amount of material shot (pardon the pun) was enough to make a film running at over at week - but several edits later we are left with a masterpiece of around two and a half hours in length.

Logistically speaking the film was a nightmare to get finished, after late minute recasts, Martin Sheen played the lead role whilst suffering from alcoholism and nearly died of a heart attack. His poor health lead to his own brother stepping in to double for him in many scenes. The script was constantly re-written and the ending was changed several times over in subsequent edits. The film went massively over budget, the sets were wrecked during ... Read More:

I first saw these films when they were aired on channel 5 a while ago but only saw about half of the first film, all of the second and none of the the third one. So the incentive was there to buy them, after what i had seen of them i thought it would make a great addition to my dvds. I wasnt wrong either. Though to be honest i couldnt see some of my friends either watching them or buying them, as these films aren't mindless action and explosion fests. They take time to watch, literally and mentally. If you really want to get the best from them, set aside a night where you can watch them in peace to soak up the class of them directing, script, acting and story. They are completely different to the more modern gangster/mafia films. The time is taken for you to get ... Read More:

VHS : The Chase [1966]
Arthur Penn has set the stage for a great social satire on various issues like class distinction ,racial bigotry, saturday night social revelvry, adultery and finally the failure of justice in a breach of the american dream in this taut drama set in a texan town on a warm saturday night .

Redford has broken from prison and a lot of people are afraid for themselves due to a freaky guilty conscience,as they have wronged him and fear revenge and this premise becomes a viloent circus on the american attraction to the glorification of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Fonda As Redfords wife and Brando as the sheriff is trying to find him before he can be slaughtered as a sacrificial lamb by the town people who need a show on saturday night to entertain themselves ... Read More:

VHS : On The Waterfront [1954]
Multi Oscar winning film, brilliantly directed, with a superb cast. Eva Marie Saint is excellent, Karl Malden, Rod Steiger, but the genius of this film is of course Marlon Brando.

Marlon Brando - A stunningly handsome man, who wasnt just a beautiful face, this man was possibly the greatest actor of all time.

With his unique voice and a face that has you transfixed at the screen, Marlon Brando delivers an absolutely stunning performance in this film.

The scene in the car with Rod Steiger, where Brando says ' I could have been someone'...just hit the rewind button over and over again....that is one of the finest scenes in cinema history. It's 'real' and he acts to perfection.

Marlon Brando gives the performance of a lifetime ... Read More:
