VHS : Playing The Field - Series 1 [1998]
An excellent introduction to The Castlefield Blues. A video that works on so many levels with football and soap opera combined. The characters are gritty, believable and they make you realise you know someone just like them. A nice first package of season one complete, it's just a shame for us that bought season one when it came out that you can only buy season 2 by buying season 1 again.

VHS : The Haunted Mansion [2004]
THE HAUNTED MANSION is another film where ordinary folks see dead people. The last was GOTHIKA. The original was, of course, SIXTH SENSE. It's evidently an inconvenient talent. (A very clever knock-off of the theme was THE OTHERS of a couple years ago starring Nicole Kidman. Its subtitle could have been, "I see live people.")

Eddie Murphy and Marsha Thomason are Jim and Sara Evers, a high-powered husband and wife realtor team. Sara is invited by Mr. Gracey (Nathaniel Parker) to visit his home for the purpose of listing the property. But it's pretty good. Now I may just have an addictive personality type, but I was hooked after one viewing. Lesley Sharp, James Nesbitt, John Thomson. . . they're all really believable in their roles as blue collar Northerners hoping for something better than what they have currently, so believable that you wonder whether the roles were written specifically for them. Physical appearance, wardrobe, vocal inflections, mannerisms - nothing is missing in their characterizations. These characters come to life.

While there are a lot of story threads to weave together (even Charles Dickens might blanch) like Theresa's near-miss wedding, Shazza's nearly lost career, the impact of Geraldine's pregnancy on her car dealership, and Jo's discovery of her true ... Read More:

VHS : Playing The Field - Series 3 And 4 [1998]
This was always a 'Never a dull moment' type of series from Kay Mellor.Yes-some of the content could be deemed a little cliche',I mean how many people in Leeds say 'Flamin' Nora' nowadays but I was always glued to it and thoroughly entertained.Series 3 is a tone darker than 2, we have a lot less football and the resolution of Shazza Pearce's character could of been a lot better. The new coach for the girls was a little bland and had a hard act replacing james Nesbitt but he improved in series 4 as did the mood and generally the series finished on an impressive-if dramatic-ending.If you were fondly enthralled by series 1 & 2 and its lighter moments you might be a tad disappointed but overall the series retained me as a fan and will continue to do so.Start by buying ...
