VHS : Mrs Doubtfire [1994]
After throwing a secret party for his son Chris's 12th birthday , Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) lands himself in hot water with his wife Miranda (Sally Field) and she demands a divorce.

When Miranda wants to hire a housekeeper to look after the children, Daniel is outraged that Miranda would rather let a stranger look after the children than him so with a little help from his make-up artist brother, Daniel turns up to an interview as Mrs Doubtfire, a british nanny who has 15 years experience under her belt and is hired on the spot.

Mrs Doubtfire is a fantastic family film that is funny, sad and touching all at the same time.

VHS : Anastasia [1998]
I recently bought this DVD in a fit of nostalgia. I remember seeing "Anastasia" when it was first released in cinemas ten(!) years ago now, and I blame it entirely for my lasting obsession with all things Russian. I settled down to watch it, fully expecting my childish whim to be satisfied.

Visually, this is an outstanding film. Half its power is in the appearance of St. Petersburg and Paris, both of which are a feast for the eyes: I defy anyone to not want to live in early-Communist Russia after watching this! Joking aside, real attention has been paid to fabrics and buildings and as a result they look truely magical. The characters, too, move well in front of their backdrop, and I have to congratulate the production team for making ... Read More:

VHS : Lorna Doone [1990]
Yes this version takes liberties with the book, cutting away much of the historical detail. But it works (or I am a philistine) allowing dramatic licence to hold sway over historical accuracy (the book is overly long anyway, and would have benefitted from some serious editing). I remember watching this as a little girl one winter's afternoon and thinking how impossibly romantic. It really brings to life the story and the sense of wildness that surrounds Exmoor.

This is far superior to the recent BBC version--with its lacklustre protaganists and little chemistry between the leads. Here the romance sparks, we have a headstrong and wilful Lorna, willing to risk her very life to be with John-- far better than Amelia Warner's pitifully bland performance. ... Read More:

An excellent introduction to The Castlefield Blues. A video that works on so many levels with football and soap opera combined. The characters are gritty, believable and they make you realise you know someone just like them. A nice first package of season one complete, it's just a shame for us that bought season one when it came out that you can only buy season 2 by buying season 1 again.

5.White Buffalo [1977] starring: Charles Bronson, Jack Warden, Will Sampson, Clint Walker, Slim Pickens

VHS : White Buffalo [1977]
Charles Bronson plays an ageing Buffalo Bill, who is haunted by nightmares of a charging white buffalo. Haunted to such an extent that he sets out to find and kill the creature - which he is even far from certain exists. Along the way, he meets with an Indian Chief who is also hunting the animal since it destroyed his village.

While the special effects leave a bit to be desired (you can see the railtracks that the dummy buffalo is dragged along on through the snow !!!), this doesnt detract from the sense of foreboding the movie builds on, as a haggard Bronson stalks an eery landscape in search of this dangerous, even mythical, creature.

Memorable scenes include a shot of millions of buffalo bones piled high alongside the railroad, and Slim Pickens ... Read More:

VHS : The Drum [1938]
The Drum came out the year before The Four Feathers; it's fun but not as good. The time is the years before World War I. Sabu plays Prince Azim, a young princeling from a British protectorate up near the Khyber pass. His uncle, Prince Ghul, killed Sabu's father, the rightful ruler, and chased Sabu out. Prince Ghul is played by Raymond Massey with sneering lips, bulging eyes and dark makeup. After several adventures as Prince Azim tries to escape Prince Ghul's assassins, young Azim contacts Captain Carruthers (Roger Livesey), whom he had met earlier. Carruthers and a small contingent of British troops set out for the principality to inforce a peace treaty, not knowing that Ghul is organizing the mountain tribes in a revolt against the British. Will Prince Azim be believed ... Read More:

VHS : Playing The Field - Series 1 And 2 [1998]
But it's pretty good. Now I may just have an addictive personality type, but I was hooked after one viewing. Lesley Sharp, James Nesbitt, John Thomson. . . they're all really believable in their roles as blue collar Northerners hoping for something better than what they have currently, so believable that you wonder whether the roles were written specifically for them. Physical appearance, wardrobe, vocal inflections, mannerisms - nothing is missing in their characterizations. These characters come to life.

While there are a lot of story threads to weave together (even Charles Dickens might blanch) like Theresa's near-miss wedding, Shazza's nearly lost career, the impact of Geraldine's pregnancy on her car dealership, and Jo's discovery of her true parentage, ... Read More:

VHS : Chalk - Suzy Arrives [1997]
Okay, at fist the idea seems dumb - How funny can a comedy about a school be?

The answer - Very,very,very funny

Ok it looses it around the middle of the second series , but I think the BBC should be applauded for 10 epsoades of class, rather then 2 filled with rubbish. Its a moot point anyway, since the second series hasn`t been released on video yet (and knowing the beeb, never will be)

In a way, Chalk reminds me of a modern day Fawlty Towers, with the same larger-then-life charcters who never seem to do anything majorley wrong, yet still get into the strangest situations, with Depuety head Eric Slatt getting into trouble as easily as John Cleese ever did.

If it wasn`t for `Coupling`, Chalk would rank as the best BBC comedy of ... Read More:

VHS : Playing The Field - Series 3 And 4 [1998]
This was always a 'Never a dull moment' type of series from Kay Mellor.Yes-some of the content could be deemed a little cliche',I mean how many people in Leeds say 'Flamin' Nora' nowadays but I was always glued to it and thoroughly entertained.Series 3 is a tone darker than 2, we have a lot less football and the resolution of Shazza Pearce's character could of been a lot better. The new coach for the girls was a little bland and had a hard act replacing james Nesbitt but he improved in series 4 as did the mood and generally the series finished on an impressive-if dramatic-ending.If you were fondly enthralled by series 1 & 2 and its lighter moments you might be a tad disappointed but overall the series retained me as a fan and will continue to do so.Start by buying 1 & ...
