VHS : Dennis [1993]
After my young son watched this film twice in one day I decided to watch with him, at the third showing!. `Dennis` is so typical of all children at that age, and I could see what my son found so amusing as he would tend to do the same things given half the chance. Having a bad guy also helped to keep the story going. For us adults though, Walter Matthau proves to be a real comic genius. Think of `Home Alone` but without Macaulay Culkin, thank goodness!.

I purchased this a long time ago, watched it once and shoved it to the back of the cabinet, where it lurked unwatched. Recently, I had another look, and I must admit, given all things happening in reality, it gave a new perspective on the film. Tim Robbins is 'good' in the movie, but I must say Jeff Bridges' performance (Either intentional or as directed) has a slightly ludicrous and annoying angle to it - trying too hard to engage the viewer in 'tension' and Bridges' character's perceived mania at what he believes is happening. VHS : Gattaca [1998]
To understand Gattaca, it helps to know a little history.

About a century ago, progressives took up what the New York Times in 1912 called the "wonderful new science" of eugenics. Because of improvements in medicine and public health, eugenists said, the "unfit" were having more children than the "fit." Their solution included both positive eugenics--encouraging the "fit" to have more children, and negative eugenics--preventing the "unfit" from having children.

Forced sterilization laws in some 37 states were their greatest achievement, with California being the most zealous in applying its law. But legislation in more conservative states, particularly in the South, was blocked by claims that forced sterilization was unconstitutional. ... Read More:
