VHS : Spy Game [2001]
Spy Game is everything we're not supposed to expect from a major Hollywood movie: engrossing, intelligent, well written, acted and directed. But that's just what it is and more, this is definitely the best thing I've seen since Memento. Although Pitt is really good and Redford plays himself as well as he has in years, I think the most credit should go to Tony Scott. In the hands of a lesser director this could have been something more like Mission Impossible. But Scott stays right on target, keeping us interested, developing the characters, and keeping the pacing nearly perfect. Scott also shows us that he's stayed with the times: he employs the full array of modern camera tricks like fast motion, reverse zooms and funky lenses but in a way ... Read More:

Capt. Sir Richard Francis Burton and his mate, John Hanning Speke's travels to find the source of the Nile, and travails to claim the rigth to say that either of these two gentlemen adventurers discovered the source of the Nile makes for one of the biggest and best EPIC adventure films in recent memory. The performances from Patrick Bergin (better known for PATRIOT GAMES and SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY), and Ian Glen (last seen on Broadway opposite Nicole Kidman in THE BLUE ROOM), turn in career-making perfomances as the two polar opposites who race to find the glory at the end of finding the source of the Nile. Bob Rafaelson, the man behind the camera, does not feel the need to spare the audience of any graphic details from the expeditions (including ... Read More:

VHS : Dirty Weekend [1993]
Michael Winner is back - this time without Charles Bronson, who went on filming DEATH WISH V. This time Winner tells the story from a woman's point of view - and does a good job at it! Descent directing and a quite good story - based on Helen Zahavi's novel of the same title.
The psychological aspect of this movie is a lot better than in most of its kind - Lia Williams is convincing as Bella by portraying her transformation from victim to vigilante. There is some cynical dark humor in this as well - a wink to that end scene of Death Wish 1?
Quite graphic in the depiction of sex and violence, but then again, aren't they all? A few scenes do seem a bit staged (Gun store scene) or remind of other movies (Bella taking out 3 guys in an alley, Bronson-style), ... Read More:

VHS : Bad Company [2002]
I wasn't sure what to expect from this film. I thought it would probably be quite silly and predictable, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I didn't get the irritating "why are they doing that" feeling, which made this film very watchable. I wouldn't call it a comedy but I suppose it depends on your sense of humour but there are some amusing bits. I enjoyed the car chase after they get the bomb.
I expected there to be some extras such as out-takes on the DVD but there is only a short documentary. Again watchable, but its more of a chance for the actors and director to praise each other rather than enhance the film.
There is a brief bit in the documentary when they hint at a relationship between Hopkins character and the female on the team ..can't remember ... Read More:

VHS : Midsomer Murders - Painted In Blood [1997]
An excellent episode in the "Midsomer Murders" series, I believe this is the first time that Chief Inspector Barnaby gets taken off of a case. It all starts innocently enough. A group of amateur painters, including Barnaby's wife, Joyce, gathers in a Midsomer village to paint a lovely landscape. Nothing would appear to be more peaceful, until one of the artists gets killed in broad daylight without a single member of the group observing the crime. It becomes even more interesting when Barnaby's investigation uncovers the fact that the victim is not at all what she appeared to be. The fact that Joyce was on the scene (notably, she found the body) leads Barnaby's superiors to remove him from the case in favor of a special investigation unit. However, Sergeant Troy, ...
