VHS : Full Metal Jacket [1987]
the most influential and seminal work to come out of hollywood on modern day warfare .
it is both stunning and philosophical with a very pluralistic look at the vietnam conflict where it has no sentimental observations about the victims but just a non chalant attitude to the protagonists who are involved in war as a casual everyday necessity.
it is neither patronising nor glorifying just seeking to express the perceived truth from the makers viewpoint and it reaches a celestial height both creatively and artistically .
matthew modine gives a great performance but the limelight is stolen by the cameos and short -lived but memorable characters played by a terrific cast of gifted actors .

Seen this at the cinema and a couple of times on TV.Bought this to try out my new KEF Kit 100 system and was not disappointed.Still makes you think how young these "men" were and a visit to the American War Cemetery at Madingley nr Cambridge only confirms this.

View this as a whole and you will be left up, down and numb via the film's realism and gritty content. The character depth is so close to reality that you empathize with their situations. I am proud to own this alongside other work by Modine.

VHS : Short Cuts [1994]
I bought this film because I saw about 30 minutes of it 10 years ago on tv, and wanted to see the whole thing. It's 2 hours long, but you don't notice it.

Included is a bonus extras cd which has 2 documentaries, one on the making of the film , and one on Raymond Carver, as well as other bit and pieces.

As if all that wasn't enough, bundled with the 2 cds, is the book "Short Cuts" which has all the nine short stories written by Raymond Carver , on which this film was based.

I got my film, but also a whole lot more, so this is fantasic value for my in my humble opinion.

I watched this film based on the actors and actresses in it. Not heard of it before or what it was about but thought I'd give it a go. It has a very slow build up, painfully slow at times. As we follow the main characters downward sprial. He is an actor who after being rebuffed by his girlfriend goes on a wild binge in Miami fuelled by drink, drugs and sex. After getting his life together back in New York his thoughts pass back to his time in Miami, he goes back to discover some shocking truths about his actions.
Thankfully it is well acted and has quite a good ending, worth a rent but not great. 6/10

6.Crazy For You [1985] starring: Matthew Modine, Linda Fiorentino, Michael Schoeffling, Ronny Cox, Harold Sylvester

VHS : Mrs.Soffel [1984]
This is a tragic winter tale, base on the true story of brothers Ed and Jack Biddle, and their escape from a Pittsburgh jail at the turn of the century. Mel Gibson uses an American accent on screen for the first time, giving a superb performance as the handsome older brother, charming a seemingly helpless Diane Keaton until she helps them escape into the snowy covered countryside, leaving her husband and children behind.

The cinematography and locations are excellent, with suitably muted colours creating a very atmospheric backdrop, accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack.

A very moving story.

VHS : Hitler: The Rise Of Evil [2003]
Any book, film, radio drama, or TV documentary that concerns the life of Adolf Hitler is bound to elicit strong feelings. That was true during the man's political career and it remains true today. Though we are now in the twenty-first century, the boundaries of political correctness remain present regarding what can and cannot be said about this individual. That disclaimer aside, let me start off by saying that this dramatisation of the early (pre-Second World War) part of Hitler's life is a strong step toward coming to terms with who and what he was. Robert Carlyle's performance is absolutely compelling, but there are some serious drawbacks that future dramatisations will have to work around if they are to match the headway that historical studies have made.
