VHS : White Sands [1992]
An early 1990s effort directed by NZ director Roger Donaldson (Species etc....) with great cast of William Dafoe in an early lead role as a local sherif who lets his enthusiasm to solve a murder lead to impersonating a dead FBI agent; Mickey Rourke as gum chewing and nattily dressed villain (not too different from his few "good guy" roles now I think of it!); an affluent femme fatale with a difference in Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Sam Jackson as a wild card FBI operative, plus a well scripted multiple double crossing story that keeps you guessing till the end, all beautifully filmed in New Mexico, a part of the USA I still think is amazing for its natural scenery.

I completely missed this on release but purchased the DVD in ... Read More:

Jim Carrey is an incredibly talented actor. Unfortunaly, as a comedian, he is not funny in the slightest. If you into silly voices, facial expressions and general preschool 'now i know my ABC's' manarisms and gags, this film will be sure to please you.

Well, what can I say! This movie managed to win me around the second time I watched it. For me, Travolta gave the most remarkable performance as Jack Stanton. His acting was a mixture of dry humour and steely resilience in the face of some pinching obstacles. His attempt to impersonate Bill Clinton is clear for everyone to see. Perhaps, its the accent and the laugh that gives it away! It's really heart warming stuff but the issue at heart here is deadly serious and thought provoking. Yet, who exactly is one being forced to be serious about? Clinton or the other President's in American history who have gone through similar shame? I can't help but feel that this film ultimately redeems Clinton's actions in his private life. It also forces the question ... Read More:

Excellent little gem of a film that deserves to be better known. Adrien Brody plays a kidnapper who buries a rich man's wife for the ransom of $1 million. Having been caught he insists on talking only to the police officer, Maura Tierney, whom he sees responsible for his capture. With time running short,to save the buried woman, Tierney finds herself being drawn into Brody's twisted mind games. Adrien Brody is well cast and gives a memorable performance; Maura Tierney, i think, gives a simply magnificent performance as the officer with dark secrets of her own. I rate her performance among the best anyone's given in recent years.

This was my first experience of a brilliant writer, Marc Lawrence, who creates a refreshing, bright and original story in a genre where possibilities are fairly limited. Lawrence's real skill is in the short, every-day scenes (people waiting in a queue, or riding in a taxi) where he puts surprisingly original words into the mouths of what appear to be ordinary people ( as Woody Allen does) thereby revealing some quirky and very humorous feature about that character. Lawrence also has a knack of allowing characters to speak our own inner-most thoughts as if they were everyday truths. But there is no doubt that the brilliant writing is given three dimensioal life by the acting of Ben Affleck, who can handle the various demands of his craft better than ... Read More:

Something mankind seems to have lost with his concrete environment and something that plays a key role in the film.

From the first moment I was drawn into the story. It speaks to you on so many levels it is astounding.

Watch, enjoy and be inspired by the courage of one doctor to return to man in his true form.

In harmony with the world and at peace with himself.
