VHS : The Hunchback Of Notre Dame [1939]
This film is great on all levels - the performances of course, especially a very young Maureen O'Hara before the studios removed the naturalness, the music, the sets - but what really stands out is the cinematography and mise en scene: you feel that this is what medieval Paris was really like. Scenes such as the one where Quasimodo brings a caged bird to Esmeralda, or when he leaps on to the giant bell - "she made me deaf" - have tremendous emotional power. This movie should be available for Region 2, along with other greats of the 30s such as the Lubitsch films.

This St. Patrick’s Day my wife and I decided to build a fire and enjoy this Irish classic. The music, the scenery, the story line and the dialogue ensure its enduring status.

A real test of a work of art is whether the viewer keeps finding something new in it time after time. “The Quiet Man “ meets this test. This time I was impressed by the cultural tension between the Americanism of Sean Thornton (John Wayne) and the Irishness of the other characters, something which I had not picked up on so keenly in past viewings.

Whether you are ready for your first or fiftieth viewing, “The Quiet Man” will always be a treat.

I have liked this movie since I was a child and was sceptical when the Attenborough version came out - but delighted by the result.

This is a great feelgood Christmas movie that I have now shown to my 11 year old who loved it. It has all the charm of a Christmas story and you really want Chris Kringle to be the real Santa. Which, of course, he is.

Putting the two versions together - The original has a much stronger start and the remake has a better court scene and final scene. Perhaps one day there will be a combined version.

VHS : Rio Grande [1951]
Rio Grande was filmed in the year of my birth. With that in mind and thinking how life has changed so much over the last 50 years maybe this film shows just how culture and values have changed. I had seen this film many times at the cinema as a child and on TV. In all honesty I didn't require reading any review to decide on purchasing. So how do I balance bias with objectivity? Not easy maybe but I'll try.

The concept for this film came from a short story printed in a New York paper. For those interested in such things this DVD comes complete with a short but extremely interesting extra about the making of the film and the politics behind its creation. This extra also contains most interesting interviews with co stars Ben Johnson (Trooper Travis Tyree) and ... Read More:
