. . . and I didn't. Yes, I know, it gets all the plaudits, and continually features in favourite film lists, but my wife and I found it exceedingly tedious, and the acting both over-the-top and wooden (if you can combine the two). By OTT, I mean gushing and melodramatic. By wooden, I mean unconvincing and uninspired. We squirmed. The story is slight, but I know that's not the point. But, when it is so slight, you need everything else in place and for me - who has admired Trevor Howard in any things - it just didn't hang together. Sorry to be so frightfully stuffy, and all that, but it's an absolute stinker of a film.

2.Laurel And Hardy - No. 26 - Country Hospital / Them Thar Hills / Tit For Tat starring: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Billy Gilbert, May Wallace, Estelle Etterre

VHS : Laurel And Hardy - No. 26 - Country Hospital / Them Thar Hills / Tit For Tat
Three classic comedy capers with Stan & Ollie, County Hospital (1932), Them Thar Hills (1934) and Tit For Tat (1935). I must say, this is a very fine collection with first-released format in the titling.
County Hospital's funniest bit of action is when Stan lifts up a Pendulum and Ollie's foot comes down. The Doctor (Billy Gilbert) tries to grab it from him, but falls out the window (and you can imagine about Ollie!).
Them Thar Hills and Tit For Tat both feature quarrels with Charlie Hall. Tit For Tat is 50% funnier though, especially the bit when Stan & Ollie dump a Can of 'Rex Pure Lard' upside-down on Charlie Hall (with the lid off.
This is not to be missed.

3.Laurel And Hardy - No. 20 - Sailors Beware/Men O'War/Two Tars starring: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Anita Garvin, Frank Brownlee, Harry Earles
directed by: Hal Roach, Fred Guiol

VHS : Laurel And Hardy - Come Clean/ Going Bye-Bye / Love 'Em And Weep [1931]
'Come Clean' was realesed just after their first feature film 'Pardon Us' in 1931 and is a 5 star 20 minute short. The Hardys are having a pleasent night together but get disturbed by the Laurels knocking at their door. When the Laurels pop in Stan (the thin one) asks if he can have some ice cream. The Hardys do not have any so Ollie (the fat one) with Stan goes out to buy some. On their way back from causing havock at the ice cream shop they see a woman trying to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge into a river. Stan and Ollie (with difficulty) manage to save her from dying and when she wakes up she said "Now that you have saved me you'll have to take care of me or I will scream and tell the world that you tried to kill me". VHS : The Informer [1935]
John Ford directed this deeply dark vision of poverty and revenge in 1920s Ireland in 1935 and got an Oscar for his efforts. And rightly so. It tells the story of Gypo Nolan, (not the sharpest knife in the drawer and brilliantly played by Victor McLaglen), who after being ousted from the equivalent of the IRA during the Irish Rebellion becomes destitute and hungry. In order to put food on the table and save his sweetheart from prostitution he decides to turn-coat and inform on one of his former comrades for the reward money. Then things really start to slide... This grim fog-laden tale is so thick with atmosphere and tension that it had me on the edge of my seat all the way through.

Ford made 'The Informer' the same year he made ... Read More:
