VHS : Before And After [1996]
When sulky teen Jacob Ryan (Edward Furlong) is accused of killing his girlfriend, his parents (Meryl Streep, Liam Neeson) first try to cover up what really happened; later, the truth comes out. Or is it the truth?

How such talented actors could make such an abysmal film is nothing short of amazing. The movie is just bad. Every word that the characters say sounds like, well, movie dialogue. None of it rings true. Everyone - from the parents, to the boy, to his little sister, to the lawyer - is way too Noble and Heroic to be believable. The pregnant pauses, pained expressions, and lofty platitudes about loving one's family and doing the right thing are over-done and just plain boring.

There's no question Streep and ... Read More:

VHS : The Bridges Of Madison County [1995]
Having recently read a feature in Sight & Sound abaout how Clint Eastwood is possibly, going on his track record, America's greatest living director, I felt that, as a self-respecting film fan, I should really delve into a bit of his back catalogue. For some reason, the blurb about 'The Bridges of Madison County' appealed to me more than many of his other films, so I rented it and was in due course blown away.
The film is full of incredibly emotive, and as it moves on, incredibly tense scenes, expertly played by Eastwood and co-star Meryl Streep. It's fundamentally a love story, with Streep, playing an Italian who has moved to live in Iowa simply because it is in America, torn between her husband, who she has apparently grown out of ... VHS : Sophie's Choice [1982]
This film had all the elements to be a great film of our time. A great story with a narrative full of emotion. First rate performances esp from Streep but also Kline and McNichols. For some reason however this film did not gel well together despite the fine and wonderful performance there is an element of humanity lacking from the film. Streep's performance is superb and totally deserved her Oscar but by the end of the film I felt I had been cheated. Given the acting talent this film had going for it the whole package just seemed like a damp squid.
It is a good film but not great.

VHS : Death Becomes Her [1992]
This is one of my favourite films. The cast are obviously enjoying being in it as well which makes it nice to watch. There's some wonderful barbed dialogue and the performances are (while maybe a little broad at times) excellent. The reason this gets 4 stars and not 5 is the DVD itself.

It's only a bare bones release. There are a lot of deleted scenes from the film (including an entire subplot featuring Tracey Ullmann) that were cut out! In fact if you look up the trailer (youtube etc) for the film some of these scenes can be seen. Making it extremely frustrating that they are not included here.

In this world of "Special Editions" and constantly repackaged DVD's can't somebody at the marketing department suggest a re-release of ... Read More:

Having watched The English Patient a few times recently I was looking on Amazon for something along similar lines, and luckily i discovered the Best Picture of 1986--Out of Africa. "A classic along the lines of The English Patient" I mumbled to myself as i placed the dvd into the player and cracked open a bottle of red wine.

The slow pace of the movie put me off, and all we learn in the first hour is that Meryrl Streep contracts shyphillis from her cheating husband in Africa, and then Robert Redford enters the scene with a dodgy English accent and saves her from boredom and a sham marriage.

John Barry's score is one of the films highlights. The cinematography is excellent but the directing is poor. Pollack, the director, must have ... Read More:

De Nrio (Michael) and Walken (Nick) are absolutely outstanding in this film and their friendship, and similarly love for the same women, grounds the film as one of the best dramas about war/friendship/community ever made. Cimino has produced a film that is so easy to immerse yourself in and get close to the characters, that it at times seems to transcend fiction and present itself as a historical documentary about the impact the Vietnam War had on America. However, war is not the main theme of this film; rather it is used to show the impact it has on friends, loved ones and close-knit communities. By the end of this powerful epic the viewer is left in no doubt that attempting to conquer other countries is a futile and devastatingly pointless act. It is also disappointingly apparent ... It seems to fall to me to rain on the parade of admiring reviews here. Yes, the film is beautifully filmed, especially at Lyme Regis, which I know quite well. The main street (and the Cobb, a kind of mole jutting out into the sea) was totally turned back in time and brilliantly. Yes, the acting is excellent, though I do not find Iron's lugubrious bourgeois almost-gentleman in Angst act too enthralling (as seen elsewhere, e.g. in Brideshead Revisited).

In the end, I just did not find this story of parallel 19th and 20th Century love stories (both led by Irons and Streep) very interesting; neither to me was the 19th Century one very plausible, whereas the 20th Century affair was simply banal.

Worth seeing once, though.

Gather three Australians and turn the conversation from footy to the Lindy Chamberlain case. One of you is almost certain to survive the encounter. Although the survivor will almost certainly be only you. Still arousing the highest passions among Australians, the death of baby Azaria Chamberlain and the subsequent jailing of her mother for murder remains the most noted legal and social episode there. Even this film and new evidence has failed to clear the Chamberlain's name, indicative of the bizarre circumstances surrounding Azaria's death. "The dingo took my baby" remains a derisive expression in the Australian lexicon.

Spellbinding isn't a trite phrase in describing this film, even if you already know the story. Schepisi keeps the focus tight on the Chamberlains and their dilemma. ... Read More:

VHS : The River Wild [1995]
A beautiful film about the Colorado River. The hero is the river and the nature it crosses, the gorges and the rapids and the falls. And you will go down the river in a light boat. Beautiful indeed. Then the film sets a plot on that river of a nice vacationing family held hostage by the surviving thieves of a cattle auction robbery who try to escape the police after the robbery by using the river and the expertise of the mother of this family. This adds some family tension with a father who is working too hard as an architect and neglecting, in a way, his family, and yet he will save his wife and his son from the grip of the thieves after having escaped them before. Courage, for sure, tenacity definitely. And the beauty of this river all over and always. This plot is multiplying the beauty of the river just as ... Read More:
