VHS : David Copperfield [1999]
'David Copperfield', is, by all respects, a brilliant story. It is partly autobiographical, but this gives the story an extra layer. The story of a man's development from boyhood to man is nothing new, and Dickens' novel sets his tale apart because of his emphatic understanding of human nature. This adaptation however, is fairly pedestrian in its handling of human emotions. Trevor Eve is perhaps, a little OTT and there is very little depth to his character, whilst I could say the same to Emilia Fox and Zoe Wannamaker.
The real triumph of this adaption is, I feel, Maggie Smith's performance which is in a league of its own. Betsy Trotwood is a very likeable character anyway, but Smith is superb.
The film is worth a look though, for ... Read More:

VHS : The Mummy [1959]
the mummy films have never been hammer's most successful franchise, even though this one has peter cushing and christopher lee in it.
the plot is rather vague and too little happens until about the last 25 minutes, then suddenly the film picks up.
to be fair, there are some good scenes. it somehow feels reassuring to see christopher lee have some dialogue before he becomes mummified; the music is better than i thought; peter cushing is his usual dependable self.
however, despite the fact that the 1932 version by universal has its shortcomings, that film had boris karloff to help make it a success. karloff gives THE definitive portrayal of the mummy/high priest. he easily made it his own, but christopher lee is perfectly alright.
it seemed ... Read More:

VHS : Love At First Bite [1979]
This is a fabulous movie and a great parody on a fantastic character. I first saw this movie as a little girl and it's been one of my favourites for many years. I would give this film more than 5 stars if it was possible, apart from the following problem.

I bought this dvd as a birthday gift to myself (as you do!) and was dismayed when the disco scene started. The music was ok, but when the camera followed Dracula's and Cindy's foot movements, the song was completely out of place and in my head all I could hear was "I Love The Nightlife". Extremely disappointed. Now when I watch the film I just skip it to the next scene, as I can't stand watching something that looks out of sync! If a petition is available to get this song back in the movie, please let ... Read More:

I work in a video store in california. I was able to see this movie a few years ago and thought it was very funny and clever I agree with the others that this should be on dvd. I highly recommend it.I check every few months to see if it is available to buy.

VHS : I Still Know What You Did Last Summer [1999]
I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is a huge let down. Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) & her new best buddie Karla (Brandy) win a holiday to the Bahamas. Once there they are stranded after a hurricane warning. The fisherman shows up & starts slicing & dicing.

The sequel is nowhere near the same level as the original. Also the style is different. I KNOW was a clever build-up of tension. I STILL KNOW is all about needless gore, bikinis, tight clothes & cheap scare tactics.

I'll be fair and say that I wasn't bored by I STILL KNOW, the jumps did get me & when the action started I was drawn in to the drama. The film was OK, but it's a let down after seeing what was done first.

VHS : Hornblower - The Even Chance [1998]
Hornblower is what I would define as your unlikely hero. He is not poetic, rather a dull person in himself and passionate only for his job and his duty. He is quiet and not full of bloaty charmisma and charm.

You can notice the similarities he has to Nelson - not only does he share the name of Horatio (which sounds very nautical) but he is also a clever tactition. It makes for entertaining, interesting and edcuational viewing, a rare mixture of excitement and learning.

This is only the first in the series and only gives you a taste for what's to come as the series follows through the young sailor's life.

It is sometimes a bit cheesy at times, but it comes with a patriotic zeal and a willingness to infect everyone with the want and desire to join the Navy, fight ... Read More:
