VHS : Hamlet [1997]
This is a very well-directed film. The great joy of watching a Branagh-directed Shakespeare is the effort put into ensuring that the diction is as clear and natural as possible without losing the strength of the text. The cast is excellent, Derek Jacobi and Kate Winslet in particular; even cameos for which you would perhaps have doubts - such as Robin Williams, who impresses with his characterisation of Osric, and Billy Crystal as the gravedigger - work. Indeed, the repartee between Billy Crystal and Simon Russell-Beale in the graveyard scene is the funniest I have ever witnessed.

The colour and sets are spectacular, all filmed in 70mm, allowing for great richness and definition. Branagh says he wanted to escape the Gothic look of previous ... Read More:

If your hair is just beginning to go grey at the edges, you will very likely join the ranks of those who feel nostalgic for their lost youth. This marvellous film from the very beginning of the 1960s is another example (with the even better 'Saturday Night & Sunday Morning' for example) of a Britain that has gone for ever. Although filmed in black & white, one really gets the feeling of a grim and gritty country where the austerity brought on by the war hasn't yet disappeared and where the streets are just as narrow as the ideas and opinions. It seems an age ago - steam trains, an almost empty hospital car park, young people riding on buses instead of having their own motorbike or cars. In just over 40 years, the nation's morality has been turned ... Read More:

The story of how Gladys Aylward went from parlour maid to heroic missionary in 1940s China is well known, but the film bears watching time and again. There are outstanding performances by Robert Donat as the Mandarin - seriously ill, this was his last film - and of course the wonderful Ingrid Bergman, ably supported by Curt Jurgens as the army colonel. Other fine assets are the script by Alan Burgess, who wrote the original book, "The Small Woman", Freddie Young's sweeping cinematography (you would hardly believe it was made in the Welsh mountains, not China) and Malcolm Arnold's stirring musical score, including the famous children's marching theme and "Knick-knack" song.

All in all a beautiful film, emotional but not sentimental, uplifting and ... Read More:

is that i'd heard Brian Setzer (Rockabilly/swing/God) was going to be in this movie! My favourite guitarest does appear....but only in the music extras on the dvd. That's crimanal because the 'If you can't rock me' by the Brian Setzer Orchestra (and featuring Stuart Little bopping away to my idol) is absolutely classic 5 star stuff! Check out the music extras and you'll see what i'm talkin' about. Perhaps it was including in the American release? Anyway, Michael j. Fox is a hero of mine since 'Back to the future' and he does a great job bringing the voice of the little mouse to life. Out of the 3 Stuart Little movies, this is definately the best. I just wish they'd used 'If you can't rock me' in the end credits or something instead of Lou Bego's 'mambo part 2.

VHS : Doctor Who - The Movie [1996]
Doctor Who - The Movie [1996] [1963] This is perhaps one of the most underated DVD's in the whole Doctor Who series both new and classic. The main problem is the bad guy or more specifically the actor who portrays him, Eric Roberts is a great bad guy in lots of B'Movies but just wasn't right for this film (his choice was forced on the writers/director due to pressure from the american backers). On the whole though the film is a great little jaunt, the interior of the TARDIS is fantastic and McGann plays the role fantastically. idea for the future (McCoy, McGann, Eccleston and Tennant) The Four Doctors

Superb film, without flaw (except perhaps John Mills' barnet and the Afrika Korps' American half-tracks). Sylvia Sims is wonderful, Harry Andrews, Anthony Quayle, all great. The Qatara depression is the stuff of nightmares. Quayle in the minefield - 'there's something under my foot!'. I've seen this so many times, but it remains fresh and each adversity they face a challenge - that slope at the end in particular. They really don't make movies like this anymore!

i'm the kind of person that loves romantic comedies where you see your own relationship or personality shining through...this film is v sentimental for me.
I am not a "straight love story" person, i need the comedy element and this film encaptures normal r-ships & fun together. I have literally seen this flim over 100s of times.
Truly recommend it - my fave scene is the highland dance & "the way you hold your fork" Love it!! :)

The accurate account of the defence of the small garrison station in Natal during the Zulu war of January 1879.

The battle takes place on the morning after the massacre of the entire column of 24th Regiment South Wales Borderes aswell as other serving regiments totalling well over a thousand men at Issandalwanna.

Over 4000 excited Zulu warriors under the orders of their King Chekawao advance six miles in the direction of the small garrisoned outpost known as Rourkes Drift. Many of the men there are either sick or injured lying in the small hospital leaving around 125 men and serving officers to defend their position.

With the use of the Martine Henry rifle and a bayonet these gallant men many of them Welsh held back the Zulus for nearly a full ... Read More:
