With the greatest respect to more recent productions, this is the definitive version of Wilde's classic in my humble opinion.

My reasons for stating this are largely the cast. Michael Redgrave could teach Hugh Grant a thing or two about easy charm. Then of course there are two grande dames of the theatre. Edith Evans and Margaret Rutherford. Both may have looked down on their film performances, and preferred theatre as a medium. Their film performances are all we have left of them now, to give us a glimpse of their great artistry.

Wilde's words show off his frivolous genious. You stop and think 'did he mean that?' then you think 'of course he did, it is Oscar Wilde'.

This English (Irish) classic belongs ... Read More:

This film deserves so much more credit for what it achieves from Huxley's original. While some of the performances are a little shakey, this film represents one of the great Oliver Reed's finest moments - he exudes power and sexuality as Grandier, and the film achieves some particularly powerful/disturbing moments in the depiction of the ergot-addled nunnery.

HOWEVER...

This film has truly been victimised by the censors and there is Still no DVD version available - surely with the garbage which the censors let through these days this film can be restored and re-released?

3.Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner starring: Tom Courtney, Michael Redgrave

I know that hyperboles are easy to throw around on these reviews, but I think that this film conveys the waiting and hoping of people back at home while the aircrews are on a mission better than anything else I've seen.

John Mills is fantastic, as are all the actors and actresses in the film. This film is one I always try to see when its on the TV, even though I own it. I've shed a tear at it more than once.

A Genuine Classic.

This is one great spy story and the film makes justice of the original Alistair Maclean novel. It's a shame we can only get a low quality VHS version of this classic. Other Maclean stories cinematic adaptations, like the Guns of Navarone or When Eagles Dare are already available in DVD. When will Bear Island come?

This is one of my all time favourite films. I remember eagerly waiting for it (its making was well trailed beforehand) and seeing it in its debut run at the Dominion in London - complete with commemorative booklet. I saw it several more times when it came out on general release so you will appreciate that it is a film that I love and can watch over and over again. However, it is a story and not a documentary as some reviewers have implied. It is one view of events and gives a taste of some of the ground level conflicts and difficulties. It would have taken a mini-series to do history full justice.

Several reviewers have commented that some of the planes are not authentic and while that is true, they are lot more authentic than CGI creations. ... Read More:

This is a film that works on many levels. Psychologists and philosopher's could talk about those while others might just like the sturdy plot and witty script. It rates as one of the best films I've seen. It is an oddity surely that I have got to this age and can never remember having seen it referred to anywhere in a film poll or otherwise. How can this be? It's brilliant and it's sad. Which character in the film are you?

This is the story, true in essence at least, of the successful attempt by Norwegians working for the British special forces or secret services to destroy the "heavy water" the Germans wished to transport to the Reich for experimentation on a possible atomic weapon. At the time, the Western Allies thought that the Reich was neck and neck with the USA in developing atomic weapons, though in retrospect, of course, we know this was not so, mainly because most of the leading atomic specialists (Einstein, Szilard et al) were Jews who had emigrated to the USA or were born there (Oppenheimer et al). Their aim was to destroy Germany completely because it had to some extent turned on the Jews.

Despite starring Kirk Douglas, the film was made by Rank, a British ... Read More:
