VHS : The Phantom Of The Opera [2004]
Only the hardest heart, or the least feeling of people would not shed a tear at Phantom of the Opera. One of the most beautiful and yet saddest of stories ever told. This is a good production. Not as good as being at Her Majesty's in the west end of London, but very good all the same. The story takes you to a place many of us have been, to a place of love and lust, of shattered dreams and broken hearts. A place where your heart strings are played and a love song sung with exquisite emotion.
Cuddle up with your loved one, share a bottle of wine and a tear or two, and appreciate the good things you have in life, and possibly / secretly ponder those lost and left behind.
Crying is not just for sissy's, it's a good and healthy release. ... Read More:

VHS : Maigret - The Complete Second Series [1992]
Not having seen the older Rupert Davies series of Maigret, I found Michael Gambon's version of the detective to be wonderfully faithful to the Simmenon books. The whole production kept to the point with characters, sets and stories as they were written. All the characters fit perfectly, especially Michael Gambon, who in portraying Maigret brings a real sense of humanity to the part - as did Simmenon. Maigret is unlike so many other fictional detectives, such as Holmes and Poirot, in that he seems so much more real - a sensitive human being with worries about his own faults. He is a three dimensional character not a machine, nor is he a figure of eccentricity. Where the first series left off, the second continues. I only wish that more had been ... Read More:

VHS : Daylight / Hard Rain [1996]
In the late 1990's there was a small spat of disaster movies that all came out with about a year of eachother. Daylight is the (unjustly) forgotten one which gives us a group of people trapped in an underwater tunnel following a toxic explosion. Making matters worse the place is falling apart around them and waters gradually seeping in.

While Stallone actually contains himself quite well for his role, its the lead female whom makes the film for me. Amy Brenneman is completely believable with her fear, annoyance and disbelief in her situation and makes the journey very entertaining. The stunts are good and the effects are done well - although I have noticed in the big explosion - no one is actually in any of the cars that get blown up!

VHS : An Ideal Husband [1999]
An Ideal Husband is an 1895 play by Oscar Wilde which revolves around blackmail and political corruption, and touches on the themes of public and private honour. The action is set in London, in "the present", and takes place over the course of three days. "Sooner or later," Wilde notes, "we shall all have to pay for what we do." But he adds that, "No one should be entirely judged by their past.

The movie is classy and captures uppper-class London to perfection. The language is wonderful and the lines really amusing like "Women have a wonderful instinct about things. They can discover everything except the obvious" or "Fashion is what one wears oneself. What is unfashionable is what other people wear" or "To love oneself is the beginning of a life ... Read More:
