VHS : Oliver [1968]
You know this classic story by now of the boy who asked for more...Oliver Twist played touchingly in the best version on celluloid by Mark Lester...He is one of many workhouse orphans lead by the authoritarian Mr Bumble (Harry Secombe) who decides to sell Oliver to a local Funeral Director in the form of (Leonard Rossiter) of Rising Damp fame. Oliver escapes from here after a fight only to find himself making his way to 19th Century London where he befriends "The Artful Dodger" (Jack Wild) a steetwise pick pocket who takes Oliver for shelter to the affable professional pick pocket Fagin (Ron Moody) whose role probably will be remembered for a most fantastic performance. VHS : The Devils [1971]
This film deserves so much more credit for what it achieves from Huxley's original. While some of the performances are a little shakey, this film represents one of the great Oliver Reed's finest moments - he exudes power and sexuality as Grandier, and the film achieves some particularly powerful/disturbing moments in the depiction of the ergot-addled nunnery.

HOWEVER...

This film has truly been victimised by the censors and there is Still no DVD version available - surely with the garbage which the censors let through these days this film can be restored and re-released?

VHS : Women in Love [1969]
This is a nice film, satisfying in so many ways, even if the sad conclusion is anything but, but that's the nature of romantic tragedy. This is Oliver Reed's finest film performance (apart from maybe Gladiator), and must be Ken Russell's best movie bar none. Good authentic adaption of DHL, a writer whose works often arouse strong emotions one way or another. In fact human emotion is often the main focus of all his works, rather than the more overt themes of class, or raw passion. This film has a lovely period feel to it, is very intimate in its portrayal of the relationships between people with different personalities and feelings, and it distills the mood or essence of DHL perfectly. If you're prepared for a more involving, slower paced sort of romantic drama ... Read More:

VHS : Treasure Island (Devil's Treasure) [1990]
Devil's Treasure is very closly like the book Treasure Island. While many other versions have been done, they oddly don't follow the true heart of it. Sure, it's a little dated and the action scenes are quite violent for a PG rating, there is lots of fun and adventure to be had. Everyone was good in it, Charlton Heston was rather good as Long John Sliver and Christian Bale only fourteen in this, is brilliant as Jim. In all, a fun family film to watch.

VHS : Parting Shots [1999]
Hmmm tell me - how did Chris Rea's film career do after this film? It sank without trace I think! And rightly so... this is undoubtedly the strangest casting decision in movie history. Or is it? I reckon, as a mate of Michael Winner, he said he would do this for free...

I find Chris Rea as wooden as his Fender Stratocaster when he is doing what he does regularly (i.e. play derivative guitar lines whilst droning nasally) - when acting in this film he goes beyond wood.
But thankfully - miraculously - Chris is so bad that he goes right thru the other side and what you have is a film which is genuinely "so bad, it's good".
I could mention the amazingly bad music choices, the dreadful script and cameos, but I must especially mention the Scooby Doo ... Read More:

VHS : These Are The Damned aka The Damned [1963 Hammer Production]
Like one of the other reviewers I have strong memories of seeing this years ago. The film begins with a gang of terrorising bikers (not too terrorising) in Weymouth, led by Oliver Reed and evolves into a sinister plot involving Government experiments on children.

The storyline is more or less as I remember but unfortunately, having seen it on television recently, the acting isn't, the performances being for the most part wooden. The script is just a bit too portentious for the creaky storline to handle.

Having said that there is much to admire about the ambition of this movie and it's a real shame that you can't get it on DVD. However, anyone keen to get hold of a copy should search for a DVDR version on google and they should find something.

VHS : Curse Of The Werewolf (1960) [1961]
Produced when Hammer Films was at its height, this is a fine adaption of a novel about werewolves. This film also brought a very young Oliver Reed into the limelight. Overall, its a fine production with a good script. The sets may look a little amatuerish, but remember Hammer was known for its low budget successes during those years. Oliver Reed plays a young man who is cursed by turning into a werewolf during nights of the full moon. He can only be redeemed by the love of a young girl. The ending is brilliant to watch. If you are a die-hard Hammer fan you must buy this. And the price is good too. Picture and sound are good considering the film's age.

VHS : Funny Bones [1995]
I have yet to actually meet someone else outside our family who has seen this masterpiece. It is a work of genius. It's hugely funny , worrying, sad, tragic and uplifting - and there aren't too many film you can say that about.

The breadth of strange talent on display is staggering. The one man marching band who uses no instruments and the biscuit tin tap dancer to name but two.

The leads are universally excellent. Oliver Platt went on to do wonderful work (see The Imposters)and Lee Evans has never been funnier. leslie Caron is gorgeous, Jerry Lewis is bravely unlikeable and even the dog "Toast" has character. The film for me is stolen by the two older performers, Freddie Davies and George Carl who have gravity, dignity and comic timing which ... Read More:
