VHS : Romeo And Juliet [1997]
The opening sequence of this film includes arial shots of an American city in which a church spire is dominated by two much taller skyscrapers belonging to the chief businesses there. Visually, this sums up one of the important themes of the play, how material values in Verona have become more important than spiritual ones. There are many more ways in which this film intelligently translates Shakespeare's words into pictures. Particularly enjoyable is the way in which, at the Capulet's party, all the major characters play a symbol of themselves: Tybalt is a devil, Lady Capulet is Cleopatra, Mercutio is a transvestite, Juliet is an angel, and though Romeo begins as an astronaut, he ends up looking far more like a knight in shinning armour. VHS : The Day Of The Dolphin [1973]
This is one of those films where you'd look at a story synopsis and cringe. The ingredients are not promising. Talking dolphins, a half crazed scientist trying to do the right thing. Military minds who want to use the dolphins for their own purposes? Hmm. This is not promising territory.

But, against all expectations, it works! George C. Scott (who for some reason is not named as star on the Amazon listing for this film - which he certainly is) does a great job of treading the line between disney-esque kiddy fodder (always a danger when cute fish are involved) and some kind of darker "Ain't the sea menacing?" movie of the kind we've all had much more than enough of. The film treads the line, but never falls either side it.

VHS : Rocketeer [1991]
There is much to like in this film but it does drag when Cliff (the hero) and his love interest Jenny are put together. The special effects are very well done and when the story does get going it is a lot of fun. I was particularly pleased with the homage to Rondo 'The Creeper' Hatton (Tiny Ron as Lothar) and Timothy Dalton's Errol Flynnesque villain. Alan Arkin puts in good support and it is a shame that the film did not do enough business to warrant a sequel. Still, with Hollywood running out of ideas the serials may make a comeback.

VHS : Bulworth [1999]
(Warning: this film deals with gun crime and violence and multi-cultural conflicts, if you think you may be affected by this, please do not watch this)

Beatty was starting to distance himself away from Hollywood after making Reds in 1991. One of the few films he worked on, after this was the controversial black-comedy bashing the US government.

Beatty was ready at the helm, as producer, head writer, director and even a "starring" role as Senator Jay Billington Bulworth, a corrupt liberal.

We see Bulworth as a so-called modest man-a perfect one, but his polished and cheery apperance with his repetious slogans and speeches don't do him any favours with the young generation and especially the divided black communities ... Read More:
