VHS : Far From The Madding Crowd [1967]
It bemuses me to read some of the opinions expressed on here from those who are willing (inexplixably) to ignore or overlook the poor transfer of this fim onto VHS and DVD.
Far From The Madding Crowd was an event when originally released in 1967.
We sat back in our theatre seats and watched an epic on widescreen that was both enchanting and mesmerising. Julie Christie was a major star back then and dominated the screen with her portrayal of the headstrong Bathsheba.
Peter Finch, one of finest character actors ever - played the obsessed wealthy landowner Boldrewood, Alan Bates playing the romantic lead Gabriel,in another rivetting, earthy performance, and Terrence Stamp as soldier Frank Troy also turned in a fine performance. ... Read More:

VHS : Breaking Glass [1980]
Lovely punkette chanteuse Hazel O'Connor plays a blinder in the somewhat autobiographic role of Kate, desperate to succeed, whilst maintaining her ethics, in the cut-throat music business.

Hazel's brilliant songs are enough to recommend this movie in its own right but, unlike some musicals, Breaking Glass is far more than just a vehicle to promote the artiste's work. The sense of unease stoked by the rise of neo-Nazi and anarchic groups in late 70's/early 80's urban England and the shadier side of the music industry are expertly recreated here.

Furthermore, Hazel's depiction of the roller-coaster rise to stardom, resulting in mental breakdown, is impeccably observed. Why this hugely talented woman's career as an actress ... Read More:

Extraordinary story as to how Eric Williams, Oliver Philpott and partner escaped from Stalag Luft 3.
Very ingenious, much more so than The Great Escape and without the histrionics, the film is a straight forward retelling of the story of the Escape done in a very British, underplayed style.
It is not in colour and not a charismatic as The great Escape but it is completely true and quite staggering in it's bravado.
A best selling book in the U.K. eric williams went on to write others, specifically of canal cruising in the Europe of the fifties.

VHS : Girl With Green Eyes

Another great Woodfall film starring Rita Tushingham and Peter Finch.

'Girl With Green Eyes' is a good movie for those to watch who do not understand why most young girls will fall in love with a much older man at some time in their lives. No younger men are so patient and understanding - especially when it comes to young nervous, and inexperienced women. This is a romantic film, and just one of many great movies Rita Tushingham would give us during her golden decade that was the 1960s. This in places is reminiscent of the fabulous 'A Taste Of Honey' - the film that would make Tushingham a star.

Despite the great story, Maire Kean steals the movie in one superb and delightful scene when she bursts in at just ... Read More:

The hardship of being a prisoner of war can not be imagined, for a woman it must be a particular HELL, with the differnce of men & woman in POW camps one can not but imagin what they went thru. With this film it brings home the hardship of how the Japanese saw how woman fitted in with their ideals of the world, one can only look at this film and realy feel pity for the likes of the true persons that this film depicts.Although this film is a fictional story of women being taken prisoner by the Japanese forces during the 2nd world war, this story does have grains of truth in it.If one looks up other stories of the same elk than you will see that "The Town Like Alice" is a true story of courage of women during WAR.And yes there was no womens prisoner ... VHS : Death On The Nile [1978]
Having viewed "Murder on the Orient Express" and seeing Albert Finney in the role of Hercule Poirot, I was uncertain about my reaction to Peter Ustinov in this leading role, such different personalities and physical types/appearances. My concerns were quickly laid to rest, when at a hotel on the banks of the Nile, Mr. Poirot spoke in his French-accented Belgian voice to David Niven who played a lawyer representing Lynette Doyle's (aka Ridgeway's) interests, one knew this would be a film worth viewing. All the key players in this murder/drama were staying at the same hotel, waiting for the luxury steamboat "Karnak" to arrive and take them on their cruise down the Nile ...

Based on Agatha Christie's book of the same title, the film is superbly ... Read More:

VHS : The Nun's Story [1958]
This magnificent film of 1957 still shines in all its luminosity after 50 years. It reminds us of the heights to which Hollywood could rise in the old studio system, which invested its resources on quality: the actors, the director, the music, the costumes, and the splendid genuine locations, from the canals and bridges of Bruges and Antwerp to the sweeping expanse of the Congo river (The scenes at the leper colony, among many others, are fascinating.). "The Nun's Story" allows us to glimpse a slice of history of the 1930s, as it unfolds on two continents. It gives us a look back into a society, both sacred and secular, that World War II was to change irrevocably.

The superb performances of Audrey Hepburn, Peggy Ashcroft, Edith Evans, Mildred Natwick, ... Read More:

VHS : First Men In The Moon [1964]
Nigel Kneale scripted this clever adaptation of Wells' classic. In doing so he kept in much of the fun stuff. Scientist invents anti-gravity material and builds space ship. Neighbour learns of experiments and comes along for the ride. Explorers encounter strange alien beings, and get into trouble. Will they escape? Well, sort of.
Harryhausen's effects are pretty good. Yes, stop-motion had dated, but there's still something enjoyable about proper monsters. The giant Mooncalves aren't that terrifying but they provide some innocent amusement. Likewise the scenes with the Cavorite sphare flying through space. Not brilliant by modern standards, but well done and visually appealing.
Maybe there is a bit too much comedy in the first half hour or so, as Lionel Jeffreys ... Read More:
