VHS : Hobson's Choice [1954]
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" ... Read More:

"What I remember principally about Speyer was the great pleasure of meeting you, Miss Schlegel."

Thus does Ruth Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave) sincerely complement Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson). And it is from the meeting and friendship of these two ladies that the fate of Howards End - the name of Mrs Wilcox's rural home - is ultimately determined. As Anthony Hopkins states in the interviews that come as extras to this DVD, Howards End is a story about property and inheritance. "Isn't it curious that our carpet fits?" says Helen Schlegel (Helena Bonham Carter) to her sister Margaret towards the end of the movie, as if fate and unseen forces had been at work all along.

This was Merchant Ivory's third E.M. Foster adaptation, ... Read More:

VHS : Fawlty Towers - The Germans [1975]
The infamous Torquay hotel, presided over by the eminently certifiable Basil Fawlty, opens for business here with three classics from the hysterical BBC-TV series. John Cleese leads the brilliant cast as the plots unfold and the laugh-a-second scripts crackle along.

1. THE HOTEL INSPECTORS
Basil is terrified by the news that hotel inspectors are in the area -- and well he might be. The awful probability occurs to him that the eccentric guest to whom he has been so appallingly offensive may be one of the officials. His ranting turns to a pathetic fawning -- but has he got the right man?

2. THE GERMANS
Sybil is in hospital for her in-growing toenail. "Perhaps they'll have it mounted for me," mutters Basil as he tries to cope ... Read More:

VHS : Freddie As F.R.O.7 [1987]
This was published by Pocket Money Video, a Braveworld imprint; the animation is 1st class, and the cast list would grace a really top-flight movie for grown-ups! Plus the cast obviously enjoyed making the film... It's a glorious, rollicking spoof of the James Bond school of spy thriller, featuringamong others a six foot tall frog, on secondment to MI5, and the Loch Ness Monster. Enjoy- I know I have...

VHS : Fawlty Towers - The Psychiatrist + The Builders + The Wedding Party [1975]
The immortal Basil Fawlty, based on a genuine West-Country hotelier. That real proprietor deserves warm thanks from millions, for he inspired the most unremittingly funny TV comedy series ever shown. Here is Basil at his maniacal best in three cripplingly comical shows. And with him, as ever, is the lovably dense Manuel, the unflappable Folly and Basil's `little nest of vipers' -- his wife Sybil.

1.THE BUILDERS
Not for the first time, Basil's tight-fistedness finds him out. There is building work required in the hotel lobby and, when Sybil's back is turned, Basil immediately goes for the lowest quote for the job. But soon discovers why O'Reilly and his men come so cheap...

2. THE WEDDING PARTY
Basil's prudish nature is outraged by ... Read More:

The reader will not have to read many reviews about Giles Foster's 1994 adaptation of Joanna Trollope's (b.1943) novel of the same name before he or she realizes that there is considerable disagreement about the merits and flaws of this production. Without giving too much away, the essence of the main plot is thus; Anna is the Rev Peter Boverie's apparently long-suffering wife. She is in her early forties. Increasingly, Anna discerns that she has become, over the twenty years or so of their 'togetherness', rather too tightly and robustly clamped by and within the ecclesiastical mechanism of the Church of England - along with its encumbent ritual duties, expectations, taboos and the like. The plot in both the book and in this DVD of Channel 4's production deals with the ... Read More:
