VHS : Jack The Ripper [1988]
I watched it on TV and purchased the DVD and watched it 3 times consecutively for 9 hours! A great well-balanced production. I would have given 5 stars if only the DVD had included subtitles features..

VHS : No Surrender [1986]
Unlike the previous reviewer that I believe was speaking of another film this one is a funny title about the a new night club manager who, on his first night, discovers that there has been a huge mistake; the orange lodge and knights of st colombus have been booked in together. Not wishing to offend either he invites both to enter. What ensues is one of the funniest hogmanay parties in years with both sides continually fighting with each other.

However the plot has a more serious darker side to it aswell, the night club is run by gangsters and there are numerous incidents and references to the paramilitary organisations (although these are never actually named). Although the film seems to have two sides to it a funny and a serious ... Read More:

VHS : White Mischief [1987]
Having known a lady who was in Kenya from 1943 (3 years after the events on which this film is based) and having an English wife born in British East Africa a dozen years later, White Mischief was of huge interest to me quite apart from its intrinsic merit.

Jock Delves-Broughton (Joss Ackland) is in financial trouble and has left 1940 England with creditors pressing (not surprising: he spent up to £120,000 annually, equivalent to perhaps £5 million or even £10 million today!). He buys a place near Nairobi and settles with his much younger and very beautiful (especially but not only when unclothed) wife Diana (Greta Scacchi). She has been "bought" by him in return for an allowance of £80,000 annually, for 7 years. She, however, ... Read More:

VHS : Cal [1984]
This superb gem deals with the tribulations, disappointments and disillusions once the ideals face against the crude reality. John lynch is Cal a teenage boy who wants to sever his ties with the IRA. But the other side of the dramatis personae resides precisely in the fact, the widow of the policeman he helped murder, falls in love with him and he doubts if he must tell the sordid story or not.

Helen Mirren won her First Prize in Cannes as best actress in 1984 with this towering performance; (the second Prize in 1995 was awarded by The madness of King George). Ambitious and mature film that share all honors together with Hidden Agenda of Ken Loach.

VHS : Quest for Love (1971)

Romantic time-travel love story starring Joan Collins and Tom Bell.

Tom Bell plays a Physicist who gets caught up in a 'random quantum physics' experiment which inadvertently sends him off into a 'parallel universe'. Once there, and after 'finding his feet', he falls in love with a woman who is his present wife, but is about to divorce him. Having 'reconciled' their union, he then discovers she has a fatal heart condition that could have been cured in the 'other' world, but is incurable here, because the necessary treatment has not been discovered. Suddenly, he is sent back to the original universe, and has to seek out the same woman who won't even recognise him, and does not know she is ill.

An unusual ... Read More:

This movie is brilliant, My Left Foot is one of those hidden gem. Winner of many Oscars, Daniel Day Lewis makes the performance of his life as Christy Brown a cerebral palsy sufferer with a lot of courage. The movie is based on Christy Browns life, it is enjoyable for all the family and teaches us some life lessons on the way. ten outa ten, but don't take my word for it , watch it and see for yourself!

VHS : The Sicilian [1987]
No joke, this is two hours of amateurish stuff, which cannot really be called cinema without upsetting someone up there.
I just went back to see some of the scenes of this movie again because they are so ridiculous I wanted to have another go!

So, let's start in the right order (warning, contains some spoilers, but you're not really going to watch this movie, are you?):

- The fact that the movie was entirely in English should have given it away, very funny to hear would-be sicilians talking to each other in English.

- Past that, we encounter the limping professor. An attempt to add a sinister touch to an otherwise meaningless character. Very amateurish.

- Then came signs and inscriptions throughout ... Read More:
