VHS : The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie [1969]
This very rich confection is memorable and is more of a movie experience than a simple movie, because just as the all time great movies do, it grips you emotionally. There are faults you can find in it, certainly, but when it's finished you are still with it, and this has most to do with the affecting performance of Smith, which is intense, emotional and even a tad theatrical. It didn't follow the book very closely, its direction is quite stolid, you can't ignore the 'acting' of Maggie Smith, and some find the Rod McKewen song a bit intrusive and maybe even incongruous with the period of the film, but you remember this movie and remember the experience of watching it.

VHS : Othello [1964]
At first you are impressed at the list of actors that appear (Maggie Smith, Derek Jacobi, and others). Then you are impressed with Olivier (makeup and acting style). Later you notice the great camera work that gives you the feel of the play and focuses in just the right place and time. The set gives us the feel we are watching the play (not some epic movie).
After the initial thrill you are so mesmerized by the play that all you see is the characters and the story augmented with Shakespeare's wit.

Othello and Desdemona are the perfect husband and wife. They love and trust each other implicitly. It seems that many other people especially men love Desdemona also. However, his most trusted and "honest" friend decides to act on this by treachery ... Read More:

A witty, funny and heartwarming film. One of my all-time favourites that deserves to be released on DVD.
Elias Koteas deserved an Oscar for his performance.

VHS : Mario Puzo's The Last Don [1997]
I read the book and thought it was brilliantly written, one gripe was that the Don was like a poet constantly coming up with sayings. Apart from that the book had everything. I was a bit worried about watching this but i can safely say that the film has done the book justice.

I need to write seperatley about the acting in the film as it was magnificent particulary Joe Mantega and Jason Gedrick, both playing lead roles very well. Don Clericuzio played by Danny Aiello whose performance although very good, i felt someone else could have played the part better. His daughter Rosemary is played by two people one at a young age and one when she goes crazy. When she goes crazy shes played by Kirstie Alley from look whos talking. Theres a good supporting staff ... Read More:

VHS : King Lear [1983]
Well, having seen this particular play at home especially made for TV, I had expected it to be fairly poor. Surprisingly enough, all actors young and new prove to convey a brilliant interpretation of Shakespeare's existentialist-before-time play on human existence!
Had kept a VHS copy when it was broadcast around 1988 here in Portugal, but now I have this chance of getting it on DVD. Too bad about the absence of subtitles, but then again, with such vivid metaphors as those of The Bard, perhaps it is just a perfect invitation to grab the play on paper and have a look at it once in a while...!
