VHS : The Box Of Delights
This fantastic film is one of the very few DVDs that I would recommend sight-unseen to anyone. If you are a little tired of `It's a Wonderful Life' and `Holiday Inn' then I can't think of anything else which will get you into the Christmas spirit more easily.

The Box of delights is one of the best children's productions the BBC have ever done, and for a variety of reasons has managed to achieve longevity. A key factor is the approach to visual effects. A generous helping of animation mixed with real action has helped keep it seeming different and fresh, even though it's now over 20 years old. There just aren't many films or programmes which have made use of this technique so well. At the other end of the scale, a lot of it ... Read More:

I teach GCSE drama in a rough Saff London Comp and get the students hooked with Baz Lurhrmann's modern version of it and then to teach them more of what Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote the play, I show them this one by Zeffirelli - it works a treat. It is beautifully done, universal in its themes and appeal and the acting is rivitingly good - especially the very young and beautiful Olivia Hussy, though Michael York as a petulant Tybalt is equally good.

... and one that far too many people haven't heard of. I believe that this was conventionally animated, when CGI was taking an increasing share of the market. Perhaps because it didn't have the high-definition quality of the Pixar films (think Nemo) Disney never seemed to do much to promote it.

However, what it lacked in that area is more than made up for in outstandingly funny script and characterisation - the old-school values of animation. "I've turned into a cow. Can I be excused?" Yeah, the tale is a little hackneyed - an odd couple who need to learn to get along to overcome their enemy - but it is just sooooo funny.

I have never been fussed about the "modern classics" like "Beauty and the Beast" or even "The Little Mermaid". But ... Read More:

VHS : The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie [1969]
This very rich confection is memorable and is more of a movie experience than a simple movie, because just as the all time great movies do, it grips you emotionally. There are faults you can find in it, certainly, but when it's finished you are still with it, and this has most to do with the affecting performance of Smith, which is intense, emotional and even a tad theatrical. It didn't follow the book very closely, its direction is quite stolid, you can't ignore the 'acting' of Maggie Smith, and some find the Rod McKewen song a bit intrusive and maybe even incongruous with the period of the film, but you remember this movie and remember the experience of watching it.

VHS : Airplane! [1980]
Airplane is the funniest film I have ever seen. The plot is simple, an ex fighter pilot Ted, goes to the airport to persuade his ex girlfriend Elaine to get back with him. When she says no, Ted buys a ticket (smoking or non smoking!) and boards the plane, the flight crew then succumb to food poisoning and then its up to Ted with Elaine's help, to land the plane! The jokes come thick and fast and are genuinly funny. The only complaint is that this DVD has no extras but the film is side-splittingly funny, buy it now!

VHS : The Cowboys [1972]
The Cowboys is without a doubt the best film John Wayne ever made.Streets ahead of True Grit ,this is a moving story of an ageing rancher abandoned by his ranch hands who has to employ young boys straight out of school (The Cowboys)to help him to drive his herd of cows to be sold.During their trip the lads, have to grow up fast, having to face all manner of perils, having in the end to do battle with a band of rustlers,to get the herd back.I will say that The Cowboys is a good film but in truth that does not really do it credit, every aspect of this movie is good the music the beautifully shot scenes the story and the stories content, and there is something in it for everyone.Buy it and watch it over a period of years, your appreciation will only increase,The Cowboys is a film ... VHS : Hannie Caulder [1971]
HANNIE CAULDER was an international production, with funds coming from France, Spain, Britain and the USA. The result was an extremely gimmicky spaghetti western, but one of the most entertaining films ever made. The film is loaded with gunfights, chases and cliches. Raquel Welsh looks great as the home steader who is raped and let to die by bungling bandits the Clement brothers (Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam and Strother Martin).
After enlisting the help of the bounty hunter Thomas Price (Culp) to teach her how to shoot, Hannie goes gunning for her attackers. The plot is a very conventional one that is made fresh and new by the performances of Welsh, Culp and especially Strother Martin. My main disappointment was with the disc itself. There are no extras or talent ... Read More:

VHS : Ravenous [1999]
Some think trooper is best prepared boiled, with turnips, potatoes and cabbage. Others recommend that trooper be slow braised in red wine and onions, a kind of trooper bourguignon, which will produce a deep red sauce. Most, however, speak to trooper served simply, with a slight dusting of salt if available, and as fresh as can be.
--From Recipes for the Ravenous, from Ribald Rangers to Raw Recruits

With the exception of the last 10 minutes, Ravenous is a fine movie, full of revoltingly intelligent horror, with a disgustingly vivid storyline and nauseatingly moist close-ups. It's one of the best-photographed movies I've seen in a long time, and not just because of the entrails and caked blood. The movie looks cold to the bone, even inside the snow-laden huts ... VHS : Airplane II - The Sequel [1982]
I love the original and I asked for this for christmas. I wasnt disappointed. From the star wars beginning to the end, the gags and movie parodies kept coming. It was good they brought back the main characters, but great that they got some of the passengers into it, whether in the courtroom flashback or in the shuttle.
The best bit for me was when one of the people in the space station is talking to William Shatner through what appears to be a TV screen, until he opens the door and steps through it. Great slapstick.
