A brilliant film with a moral message that is as true today as it was when the movie was made.

VHS : Lorna Doone [1990]
Yes this version takes liberties with the book, cutting away much of the historical detail. But it works (or I am a philistine) allowing dramatic licence to hold sway over historical accuracy (the book is overly long anyway, and would have benefitted from some serious editing). I remember watching this as a little girl one winter's afternoon and thinking how impossibly romantic. It really brings to life the story and the sense of wildness that surrounds Exmoor.

This is far superior to the recent BBC version--with its lacklustre protaganists and little chemistry between the leads. Here the romance sparks, we have a headstrong and wilful Lorna, willing to risk her very life to be with John-- far better than Amelia Warner's pitifully bland ... Read More:

VHS : Jane Eyre - Parts 1 and 2 [1983]
This is the most faithful adaptation of Jane Eyre to date. A bit long but this means that the whole story is told in full. The two leads are perfectly cast. Zelah Clarke is "small, dark and plain" as described in the book and Timothy Dalton is simply fantastic, portraying Rochester's full range of emotions with perfect skill. He may be a bit too handsome but then again Rochester is not described as ugly in the book, he is just not conventially handsome like other men of that time such as St John Rivers is described. It is also good to hear the dialogue spoke as it was in the book and not changed as it was in the recent production with Toby Stevens.

VHS : Mrs Doubtfire [1994]
After throwing a secret party for his son Chris's 12th birthday , Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) lands himself in hot water with his wife Miranda (Sally Field) and she demands a divorce.

When Miranda wants to hire a housekeeper to look after the children, Daniel is outraged that Miranda would rather let a stranger look after the children than him so with a little help from his make-up artist brother, Daniel turns up to an interview as Mrs Doubtfire, a british nanny who has 15 years experience under her belt and is hired on the spot.

Mrs Doubtfire is a fantastic family film that is funny, sad and touching all at the same time.

5.Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) starring: Spencer Tracy, Van Johnson, Robert Mitchum, Phyllis Thaxter, Robert Walker

VHS : Restoration [1996]
The first time, this movie can seem disjointed and the main character unlikable. But by the second or third viewing, the disjointedness becomes complexity and the growth of Robert's character evident. The characterizations are fairly rich and beautifully acted by a fine cast, in beautifully shot sets and costumes. (Unlike the previous reviewer, I think the second half is wonderfully written and generally better.) If I say it reminds of truths of living a good life, that sounds preachy and is misleading; this movie is inspirational in the best sense as well as engaging and entertaining.

VHS : Since You Went Away [1944]
In 1944 it would be quite appropriate to make a movie about war.But this is about the people left at home. The wives, the children and the mothers. With stars of the calibre of Claudette Colbert,Joseph Cotton,Monty Woolley etc it is a war story simply told and well directed.Every actor gives a polished performance and it is little wonder that it attracted such high praise in the Academy Awards of that year. This is a movie you can watch often and not tire of.
