VHS : Dances With Wolves [1991]
Kevin Costner has always been one of those actors you either love or hate, much like the singing and celebrity of Victoria Beckham or Marmite.

It is unfortunate then, that it is these personal feelings which cloud judgement about whether or not to see a film. Because, in a time when the idea of race relations is once again at the forefront of the news, this simple story of a man open to change can tell us a lot.

Lt John Dunbar (Coster) is a civil war hero. Given the choice of outpost as a reward for a selfless act on the battlefield, he picks the furthest place he can find, the prairee. Also known as Indian country.

Far from being the war-mongering madmen his superiors are presented as, Dunbar is a quiet, ... Read More:

The best ever filmed action scenes of The Greasy Grass - Little Big Horn...
The best possible reenactors...
The best uniformology around...
And it REALLY clicks with ALL the books written about it... (at least the BEST of them...)

VHS : The Jack Bull [1999]
Why it never played on the big screen is a mystery to me. It certainly rivals any western to have come out of Hollywood in quite some time although without the graphic violence, sex and profanity. True, there are some scenes laced with profanity but these are few and far between. The violence is under-stated and restrained.

The film's title refers to the Jack Russell breed of terrier which is said to never let go once it latches on. Myrl Redding is like the Jack Russell in his tenacity. It is justice he wants and justice he will have, even if it means the loss of everything he holds dear.

His resolve will be sorely tested as he launches a very personal vendetta against rural Wyoming bully, Henry Ballard, masterfully played by L.Q. Jones. The ... Read More:

VHS : Geronimo [1993]
Sometimes, stunning camera work adds significant value to a film's overall merit. Case in point is 2001: A SPACE ODDYSSEY, in which the visuals (and musical score) contributed to make it one of the great films of all time. (I saw it 8 times when originally on the big screen.) Yet the acting and storyline were so nondescript that who can remember who the actors or their characters were beyond Hal? Although certainly not carrying the same weight as 2001 in the evolution of movie making, GERONIMO is elevated for the same reason, and the acting is much better besides.

Matt Damon plays 2nd Lt. Britton Davis, newly commissioned out of West Point, who arrives in Arizona in the mid-1880's just in time to accompany the savvy 1st Lt. Charles Gatewood, played by Jason Patric, on a mission to ... Read More:

VHS : Wagons East! [1995]
A hand full of citizens of various occupations and orientations realize the west is not all it is cracked up to be. They decide to go back east, but to do this they will need a skilled and knowledgeable wagon master. Who should stumble in but the best wagon master in the west, James H. Harlow (John Candy). Naturally there is a money grubbing cabal apposed to this move and they will stop at nothing to throat the "Wagons East" plan.

Well designed with a select group of actors that never overplayed their parts. The consumes and scenes here exceptionally good for the comedy. The Indians look like Indians and the floozies look floozy. The film is jam packed with one liners.
