VHS : A Streetcar Named Desire [1951]
As a playwright, Tennessee Williams was to the South what William Faulkner was as a fiction writer: a creative genius who revolutionized not only the region's arts scene and literature but that of 20th century America as a whole, bringing a Southern voice to the forefront while addressing universally important themes, and influencing and inspiring generations of later writers.

Pulitzer-Prize-winning "A Streetcar Named Desire" dates from the peak of Williams's creativity, the period between 1944 ("A Glass Menagerie") and 1955 ("Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," his second Pulitzer-winner). After its successful 1947 run on Broadway, "Streetcar" was adapted into a screenplay by Williams himself for this movie produced and directed by Elia Kazan, ... Read More:

VHS : On The Waterfront [1954]
Multi Oscar winning film, brilliantly directed, with a superb cast. Eva Marie Saint is excellent, Karl Malden, Rod Steiger, but the genius of this film is of course Marlon Brando.

Marlon Brando - A stunningly handsome man, who wasnt just a beautiful face, this man was possibly the greatest actor of all time.

With his unique voice and a face that has you transfixed at the screen, Marlon Brando delivers an absolutely stunning performance in this film.

The scene in the car with Rod Steiger, where Brando says ' I could have been someone'...just hit the rewind button over and over again....that is one of the finest scenes in cinema history. It's 'real' and he acts to perfection.

Marlon Brando gives the ... Read More:

VHS : The Rose [1979]
This is Bette Midler's finest film role and acting of her whole career. She was nominated for an Oscar, but sadly lost out, which was such a shame. There have been a couple of other films, Beaches, but sadly not the same emotion and punch.

I watched `The Rose' years and years ago, it was playing on Channel 4 over a Christmas period. I purchased this a couple of months ago, and even today it is NOT out dated. The performance from Bette Midler is awesome, funny, moving and tragic. Even after nearly 30 years, the ending still made me cry. The last song Bette sings, toward the end of the film, is just SOOOO powerful and moving.

The only other two songs that can be placed on the same level of emotion and feeling is Purple Rain; Prince and, Emma; cover ... Read More:

VHS : Run Silent, Run Deep [1958]
With a straight-ahead, no-nonsense approach by famous director Robert Wise, and with strong performances by Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, and a satisfying number of battle sequences, this movie is a very good war movie.

Lancaster plays the newly appointed captain of the submarine, Gable plays a desk bound officer who'd had his ship shot out from under him a year earlier and wrangles a command on Lancaster's sub.
Any movie starring Lancaster and Gable (which gratefully acknowledges the cooperation of the United States Navy) is going to take a potentially explosive chain-of-command conflict less seriously than will its audience. Something has to keep us glued to our seats between the "Dive! Dive!" and "Fire torpedo two" scenes.

Where would we be without a grumbling ... Read More:
