VHS : Shrek 2 [2004]
I loved the orignal Shrek so much that this film was a must buy. However, while it is still quite fun it simply cannot live up to its predecessor. The story seems to be a rehash of the first film with Shrek's struggle for acceptance, the switch from ogre to human and donkey's antics. The multitude of fairy-tale characters in the first film seem a bit dull in this one. The Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming are wonderful but many of the other characters don't make the grade. The film is largely saved by Antonio Banderras' Puss in Boots. Overall it's quite nice and worth a watch, but does seem like just another sequel.

VHS : The Importance of Being Earnest [2002]
A nice change from the usual heaviness of period drama's, I really enjoyed this.

Very light-hearted and some laugh out loud moments. Colin Firth and Rupert Everett work well together and form a funny double act.

I was surprised that I actually liked Reece Witherspoon in this as I usually find her a bit irritating.

Another great performance from Judi Dench, what period drama is complete without her!

Definately worth a watch.

VHS : Dance With A Stranger [1985]

'Dance With A Stranger' is based on the true story of the last woman to be hanged in Britain. Mirander Richardson plays Ruth Ellis in this 'fairly' accurate story of the real-life drama.

Whilst not a huge fan of true stories being brought to the silver screen, this is interesting - if only for putting across very well how this woman should not have been executed. Whatever her morals and personality (whether you like or dislike her) it is blatantly clear that the only way to be rid of this troublesome young man (David Blakeley) was to kill him (from her perspective that is) If what we see we are to believe, this woman was 'plagued' by her one-time lover long after she'd tired of the affair and had told him as best she could ... VHS : My Best Friend's Wedding / Steel Magnolias [1997]
How does Julia Roberts do it? How does she go from being exquisitely lovely in tear-jerking drama Steel Magnolias to being exquisitely lovely in touching romance My Best Friend's Wedding? In Steel Magnolias, Roberts delivers an out of this world performance which brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. The direction and acting in this movie is truly unsurpassable; if you have not yet watched this, you haven't lived! In My Best Friend's wedding, Roberts completely swaps characters to become a neurotic career woman who realises too late that she is in love with her best friend, who has decided to marry someone else. This movie encompassess humour, romance and the keep-watching element which so many modern films lack. Fulfil your life with these ... Read More:

5.Another Country [1984] starring: Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Anna Massey, Betsy Brantley, Michael Jenn

VHS : Another Country [1984]
Marek Kanievska's Another Country, penned originally by Julian Mitchell as a play, promised a delicious gay romp with Rupert Everett and Colin Firth doing, arguably, what they do best – upper-class public-school boys, stiff upper lip fully in toe. Aside the lush, sweeping scenes of a school which is a thinly-veiled Eton, filmed in Oxford and Cambridge universities, and the hapless charm of Mr. Everett (and I do find him incredibly sexy in this film; Colin not so much for the huge 80s hair), we follow the rigid feudal society of boarding school life in England in the thirties.

The prologue opens with Guy Bennett (Everett) as an old man in heinous make-up, introducing to us the story of why he becomes a communist spy in Moscow.

These movies are great like most animated movies that dreamworks produce. It is great for the kids but has an underlying adult humour which is great. This means that i can watch it and laugh at the same time my son watches it. Very funny excellent characters. The second movie follows on really well and is just as entertaining as the first.
If you have kids i would buy it.

7.William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream [1999] starring: Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Everett, Stanley Tucci, Calista Flockhart

VHS : William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream [1999]
How can I communicate the aberration that this represents?
I hope that a number of you will be repelled simply to hear that the roles of Hermia and Helena are taken (and then forgotten about) by those mascots of "Pretty but Pointless", Calista Flockhart and Anna Friel. Calista Flockhart rides a Penny Farthing bicycle and blows the tumbling tendrils of hair off her forehead regularly - but it gets worse, even when the talent gets more accomplished.
Stanley Tucci would get laughed off a senior school stage for the way that he tries to invest Puck with thoughtfulness and fun: Jimmie Krankee would have done a better job. Rupert Everett's Oberon is reminescent of a Studio 54 Go-Go dancer murmuring something he has a distant memory of, and Kevin Kline's gurning ... Read More:

VHS : Princess Daisy [1986]
princess daisy is a fair adaptation of gloriously trashy novel. Like a big box of chocolates, its enjoyable but has no nutrious value ,the performance of Ringo Star as a camp fashion designer is something to treasure as is the po-faced intensity of the rest of the cast. They really do not make tv like this anymore. I really enjoyed this dvd,but I think for all the wrong reasons.

VHS : The Madness Of King George - Box Set [1995]
I was thrilled when Nigel Hawthorne was nominated for the Best Actor oscar for his performance as George III in this film, not only because this was a stunning performance, but because of his history on the stage (which I was privileged to attend often in London) and with BBC productions. Sir Nigel (as he is now fashioned) is perhaps best known by television audiences as Sir Humphrey Appleby, the scheming civil service mandarin from the Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister series. I have admired him for years (and most recently got to see his great performance of Lear in London).

This film also starred such British acting heavy-weights as Helen Mirren as the queen (think of the Prime Suspect series on the BBC/PBS Mystery, among others), Ian Holm as the physician ... Read More:

VHS : Merlin And The Sword aka Arthur The King [1985]
This is a triumphal and erudite retelling of the Arthurian legend of English History; containing performances of such subtle emotional power that it leaves the viewer deeply affected. And disturbed.
The stunning effects challenge your perceptions of the possible. Never before in cinematic history has an audience been asked to suspend disbelief less, yet receive so much in return. The all-star cast effortlessly convey the epic nature of the story as it unfolds before the beautifully shot landscape.
Superbly directed, with an eye for fine art this is a film that everybody should experience. A complete film in every sense. To criticise a work of this accomplishment seems churlish, petty and somehow a betrayal of the emotional core, resonant throughout this magnificent ... Read More:
