VHS : Damage [1993]
[BEWARE SPOILERS]

I don't know whether I've ever watched a film in which I identified more with all the characters than I did in this emotionally wrenching masterwork from the late, great Louis Malle. It is part of the genius of Malle to, like Shakespeare, make every character real and to see and present the depth of even those slightly off stage.

I could begin with the youngest, the daughter Sally (Gemma Clarke) who says little and is always at a slight distance, her serious face in the backseat of the car seemingly thinking dark thoughts, her face down the hallway at night, seemingly knowing that her father has committed adultery with her brother's fiancée--yet not knowing. Louis Malle wanted a certain expression ... Read More:

VHS : The Innocent Sleep [1996]
'The Innocent Sleep' is based on a true story about a tramp who witnesses a murder. In this film, Rupert Graves plays a homeless drinker with some vestige of social conscience, who, having seen a gangland murder take place, reports it to the police, and finds himself hunted by the killers.

The basic premise of the film is excellent. We see the whole story from an unusual point of view: that of the homeless, hopeless population of London. The way in their situation is both a hindrance and a help is interestingly presented. Showing us the homeless as human beings with feelings, thoughts and responsibilities should make this film an outstanding piece of social theatre.

However, it is first and foremost a thriller. And ... Read More:

VHS : The Forsyte Saga
For those how have commented that the new series of The Forsyte Saga has surpasses the old 1967 version obviously have no holding for solid acting capabilities. Yes, the 1967 Saga may have been primitive in its camera work and sets, but come on it was 1967! Television dramas were a risky business, and rather than spend money on sets, companies relied on the truly amazing qualities of their actors capabilities. The original series is more like watching a play than a television production. The cast use their body language, gestures, subconcious emotions and facial expressions to convey feelings and points otherwised not said in the dialogue. There is no need for fanciful backdrops, we had pure Galsworthy dialogue in every scene. The new series, ... Read More:

VHS : Maurice [1987]
Over twenty years after it was made "Maurice" has changed into a classic but did not age at all. This coming-of-age and coming-to-terms story faithfully taken from E. M. Forster's novel was transferred into the screen with such adroitness that with the passage of time it rather increases its appeal.
We are transferred to the Edwardian England some years before the outbreak of the Great War. The main hero Maurice is an average student (it is funny to note that everybody including Maurice considers his studies a commendable pastime but generally a waste of time as he should go into business) who falls for a fellow student, an impoverished aristocrat Clive. Their romance is purely platonic which seems to suit Clive (who finally decides to change his ... Read More:

a really lovely film, the story captured my heart and moved me awfully. Woolf's creation is a genius that i doubt could be matched today and this film does it perfect justice. Redgrave is, as always, brilliant and brings a grown up yet youthful feel to the situation. A really lovely film about loosing love and finding it again.

It may have been produced on a budget, but you would never know it. It is truly sumptuous. I have noted the criticisms of many concerning the transfer to DVD as being inferior in both sound and vision, but this Blu-ray transcription is superb in every way. It will of course play on a PS3, with no concerns about region.

Fans of the better known "Forsters" such as Maurice, A Room with a View, the works of Merchant and Ivory, and fairly similar A Passage to India, may be quite disappointed with this much more quiet and less colourful production. The story-line also offers less of a twist - this is EM Forster's first novel and he was still learning his trade. Still the movie is well worth seeing - the story and the beautiful images in dusky sepias as if taken from old photographs will keep enthralled you in front of the telly if only you can accept that the world changed immensely within the last century. A big bonus is a chance to see world-famous actors in roles not exactly identical with their current careers.

VHS : Madness of King George [1995]
I was thrilled when Nigel Hawthorne was nominated for the Best Actor oscar for his performance as George III in this film, not only because this was a stunning performance, but because of his history on the stage (which I was privileged to attend often in London) and with BBC productions. Sir Nigel (as he is now fashioned) is perhaps best known by television audiences as Sir Humphrey Appleby, the scheming civil service mandarin from the Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister series. I have admired him for years (and most recently got to see his great performance of Lear in London).

This film also starred such British acting heavy-weights as Helen Mirren as the queen (think of the Prime Suspect series on the BBC/PBS Mystery, among others), Ian Holm as the physician (most ... Read More:
