VHS : Escape From Sobibor [1987]
I watched this on the TV back in 1987 and it made a very sizeable impression on me. I then hired the DVD back in 2004 and watched it with my husband who was very much moved himself. We now own this on DVD.

That aside, this is a gripping piece of television drama with a few familiar faces - Alan Arkin, Rutger Hauer, Jack Shepherd, Robert Gwilym all coming together to attempt what was seen as unthinkable - to break out of a Nazi death camp.

The story was not familiar to many at the time it was shown in 1987 and I remember Breakfast TV actually interviewed a couple of the survivors, including Esther Raab. It is edge of the seat stuff as you watch the escape plan unfold and through the story, you find yourself caring ... Read More:

VHS : Merlin [1998]
I LOVE this film, my favourite thing of all being Mordred. Jason Done, who plays Mordred, gets him spot-on, after watching this film he has become my favourite character! Sam Neill is magnificent as Merlin. The music is excellent, very appropriate and touching in all the right places. The acting is absolutely superb, so brilliantly performed that it is utterly believable. I have never seen such fine acting. All of the charaters are perfectly cast. The writers did an exceptional job weaving the whole story together from all the old writings and legends. Mab and Frik may have been pure invention, but they made sense and helped explain why things happened the way they did. The film quality is the best I have ever seen. The scenery was breathtaking, ... Read More:

...Rutger Hauer plays a seriously on-the-edge cop who lives on coffee and chocolate (and BIG guns). Having had one partner disappear while searching for a grisly serial murderer who then vanished, he is given as a replacement one Dick Durkin when the murders start again 12 months later.

Dick is a clean living ex-college graduate who runs every morning, and then has sex with his girlfriend, (except Sunday, when he skips the run!)

Hauer's character was clawed by the killer, and this has created a link, where Hauer can 'sense' when and where the next murder is going to happen. It is this that has put him on the edge, and made him a laughing stock amongst fellow officers.

There are some great scenes, especially the 'conversion' ... Read More:

19th century Holland was apparently a tough place to grow up. If your parents couldn't afford to feed you they might very easily sell you into prostitution. Such was the fate of our young heroine Keetje.

The first part of the film dwells on an unhappy childhood with a fair amount of effort having been made to represent accurate historical detail.

Thereafter the film gets more confused. The director (Mr Veerhoeven) apparently simply can't make his mind up whether to keep on informing or to turn the whole shebang into a soft porn movie.

Eventually as Keetje mixes with the Dutch Aristocracy you end up with Upstairs Downstairs with clogs and some mild nudity.

It is hard to recognise from this film that Veerhoeven went ... Read More:

seems there are lots of 5 star reviews for this film and whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion I just don't get it. It's a film from the 80s, not much happens, no one talks very much and then it ends.
A young man is framed by a psychotic hauer for some murders he is pursued by comical, Texas cop stereotypes whilst jumping round all the holes in the plot. That's about it. 'tense, gripping thrill ride'? I've had more excitement driving to work.

What an utter surprise. I expected a dated sci fi flick that had not stood the test of time but I was wrong. This is an exceedingly moving and thought provoking film. It is also the first film in a long time that moved me to tears (anyone who has watched it will know which part I am referring to). It is utterly compelling. Much of the style and imagery may seem familiar at first, until you realise it is because it has been copied by more recent sci fi films. Watch this, it is an original.

VHS : Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Movie [1992]
This is not a great film by any measure, on the other hand it is not the worst I have ever seen. It's not a patch on the TV series, but will be interesting for hardcore buffy fans. There are numerous inconsistencies between the film and the start of the TV series (I think the biggest is that buffy doesn't get any older in the 4 or so years between the film and the TV series!). That's not really the point though, this was where it all began! There are definately a few "Joss" moments in the script, but it's not really laugh out loud funny like the TV series. It deserves a watch if you are a Buffy fan or have a couple of free hours where you don't really want to use your brain. You can get it from a marketplace seller for a couple of quid, and for that I would say it is worth it.

VHS : Turkish Delight [1973]
Turkish Delight is a fascinating movie. It's a realistic story that talks about tragic love between non-conventional artist and upper-class girl. It's one of Verhoeven's earlier movies but maybe the best one he ever made. A must see.
