VHS : Till Death Us Do Part [1969]
I saw this film in England several years ago (I hadn't even heard about the tv serial) and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I've been hoping to find it on dvd ever since. Last night I ended up discussing the film with an English mate of mine in a Brussels bar, and he told me the film is now banned in Britain, because it's not p.c. I sincerely hope this is not the case. The film never shocked me and it did NOT turn me into a racist.

VHS : The Killing Fields [1984]
This is a beautifully made, moving film depicting the harsh regime of the Khmer Rouge communist revolutionaries in 1970's Cambodia. The film focuses on the real-life relationship between Cambodian Dith Pran and American journalist Sidney Schanberg. The acting is superb, particularly from Dr. Haing S Ngor who played the part of Dith Pran and who did himself survive the Killing Fields.
In my opinion, it is necessary to have a background knowledge of the political events during this time (eg. the Cambodian government being overthrown by the Khmer Rouge and the subsequent evacuation of the cities) as without this, the film may be confusing in parts. However, this DVD does helpfully give the viewer the option to choose a brief historical recounting of ... Read More:

VHS : The Great Gatsby [1974]
This stunning production with its splendid cinematography and its intelligent script by Francis Ford Coppola captures the essence of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of the man who pursues his preposterous dream. Robert Redford is utterly convincing as the enigmatic protagonist, Gatsby, whose personality "seemed to face . . . the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you, with an irresistible prejudice in your favor" [Fitzgerald, Chapter 3]. Young Sam Waterston portrays a believable Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald's narrator and empathetic observer; and Mia Farrow is pitch perfect as the shallow, spoiled young woman whose "artificial world was redolent of orchids and pleasant, cheerful snobbery and orchestras which set the rhythm of the year, summing up the ... I saw a Sam Shepherd play recently, so I was quite surprised to see that Sam Shepherd wrote this screenplay. But having seen two pieces of his work, you can detect a style. Shepherd examines the dark side of families, the frustrations, the pain, the fights and their consequences. He likes long monologues uncovering a web of events and feelings. I think the dialogue in this film is superb.

The landscape and the music is also rich in metaphor. Kinski is a wisperish, idealised beauty. The other adult characters are weatherbeaten by life's demands. This is a long, slow and often banal film, but it says something about real lives. I first saw this film over twenty years ago. It lingers and haunts, and that thematic strum of the guitar stays with you always as a symbol of loneliness ... Read More:

I recently had the opportunity to view this film on television. A remake of the 1967 film of the same name, which was a fairly faithful adaptation of Truman Capote's sensational non-fiction book, this version does not disappoint the viewer. Although it does not have the gritty, quasi-documentary feel of the black and white 1967 film, which starred Robert Blake and Scott Wilson in the two lead roles, it is compelling in its own right and a fairly faithful adaptation.

The film follows the path of two losers, Dick Hickock (Anthony Edwards) and Perry Smith (Eric Roberts), as they careen towards catastrophe for themselves and for the hapless Klutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, upon whom they have set their sights. The pathology inherent in these two protagonists is chilling. It is also ... Read More:

The first time I saw this film, it was used as a management training aid where we had to identify different leadership styles. For this, it was highly effective. I liked it then, and was pleased to see it again after many years.

An American Colonel (Gregory Peck) whose aim is to improve the morale of an American daylight Bomber Group flying from an English war time aerodrome. They had sustained high losses...

Some excellent air to air shots filmed at the time - but essentially, it is the human aspect which makes this film for me.

I found an old VHS tape of this taken from Sky Movies.

I remember hearing about this and thinking that it sounded like a dull drama.

Turns out it's a farce with elements of screwball comedy.

I enjoyed it a lot. It's no classic and the climax is kind of under played when it really should have gone off the rails into people screaming insults at each other.

It was very enjoyable with a cast of very likable characters. It might not be one of the greatest movies ever made, but I loved it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes any of the actors in the strangely impressive cast.

It was very odd to see the Stranger from the Big Lebowski, with moustache, turn up in another movie!
