VHS : Hope And Glory [1987]
One of the best film on WWII in London... and surprisingly enough not available in the UK (and not even in European format).
I first saw the film about 15 years ago and have now bought it for my daughter (it fits perfectly with the year 3 curriculum) and of course for me. I think we've watched it about 10 times over the last 6 months.
Moving and fun, don't hesitate to buy it.

VHS : White Mischief [1987]
Having known a lady who was in Kenya from 1943 (3 years after the events on which this film is based) and having an English wife born in British East Africa a dozen years later, White Mischief was of huge interest to me quite apart from its intrinsic merit.

Jock Delves-Broughton (Joss Ackland) is in financial trouble and has left 1940 England with creditors pressing (not surprising: he spent up to £120,000 annually, equivalent to perhaps £5 million or even £10 million today!). He buys a place near Nairobi and settles with his much younger and very beautiful (especially but not only when unclothed) wife Diana (Greta Scacchi). She has been "bought" by him in return for an allowance of £80,000 annually, for 7 years. She, however, ... Read More:

VHS : Coupling - Series 1 - The Complete Series [2000]
Absolutely the funniest comedy, I have ever seen the writing is exceptional and the characters are perfect,I could not picture any other cast, and as far as the comparison to Friends well it there not even close and the new American series could never be the same not after seeing the original. This show is completely under rated then again is it? Maybe trying to copy this series, just shows how funny and terrific it is!!

VHS : Ryan's Daughter (1970)
I caught this classic recently on TV. It is a strange storm -tossed dream of a movie from 1970; a tale of a troubled romance featuring Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles. David Lean's visionary leanings run off the hook with symbolic weather and flora, Mitchum's solid, lonely turn is all there is to hang onto.

I can only write about this film in superlatives. Foremost the photography - another excellent work by Freddie Young - honoured with an Academy Award, and the acting by John Mills, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his outstanding performance as the dumb fisherman. But I would have awarded Sarah Miles (she was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar). Robert Mitchum has never been better, he fills the widow village teacher's ... Read More:

7.Lady Caroline Lamb [1980] starring: Robert Bolt|Sarah Miles|Richard Chamberlain|Jon Finch

VHS : Lady Caroline Lamb [1980]
Lady Caroline Lamb's great claim to immortality is that she coined the phrase "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" about Lord Byron. This film is largely about their brief but tempestuous affair, which scandalised Regency high society, although the scandal was mainly that they weren't as discreet about it as they should have been! Sarah Miles is perfectly cast as the highly-strung, irrational aristocrat, a girl far too high-spirited for the polite society she had to live in. It's a difficult, and sometimes humiliating role, but she carries it off with great style. Richard Chamberlain brings almost nothing to the role of Lord Byron, other than pouting a lot and the occasional bit of sneering. He looks suitably dashing though, and I guess they thought ... VHS : Blowup [1967]
Read "film-buff" reviews of "Blow Up" and you'll find a huge diversity of opinion. It's a masterpiece... it's rubbish... it's tantalisingly complex... it's hedonistically superficial... what happens in the film is "real"... nothing that happens in the film is "real"... and so it goes. Watch the film and take your choice, but the fact that it still generates such reactions is a testament to its enduring impact. So what does it have?

Well, on the down side, a lot of the acting is weak, the musical soundtrack is too self-consciously "hip", and several of the scenes appear to have been inserted purely for effect - "we do nudity, drugs and rock & roll as well as making films". And on the plus side? David Hemmings acting is superb, the cinema ... Read More:

Set around a fictional 1910 London to Paris air race and the rivalries of the pioneer aviators it attracts from all around the world to risk life, limb and some dodgy back-projection in the Paris sequences, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, or How I Flew From London to Paris in 25 Hours and 11 Minutes began life as a project on pilots Alcock and Brown for Alexander Korda. Director Annakin had already reconstructed many of the vintage aircraft before the producer's death took the project with him.

As with The Longest Day, the story provided 20th Century Fox with a great opportunity to increase its foreign box-office prospects by populating the film with popular actors from around the world, while its episodic structure and the sheer size of ... Read More:

VHS : Venom [1981]
The single best thing about this movie is Oliver Reed as the downtrodden sidekick to Kinski, whose accent is at best, difficult to understand. It seems that the makers have been caught between genres; is it a horror, or a police thriller. Quite frankly it matches neither criteria particularly well. However, it does have some redeeming qualities, and if seeing an example of the British film industry at its worst is of interest, then this is a great film for you - if not, give it a miss!
