VHS : Blackadder - Blackadder Goes Forth - Series 4 [1989]
Blackadder has always been one of the funniest and best written British Sitcoms around and this forth and last series is one of the best from the shows run. The six episodes of the series all show-off the great script and the brilliant performances by both the main cast and the guest stars. All the cast seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves throughout the series but alongside Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson, my favourite has to be Stephen Fry for his brilliant portrayal of General Melchett.

Each episode never ceases to be funny and the last episode of the series is still surprisingly touching despite the number of times that I have watched it. The one slight problem with the series is the laughter track that can be somewhat ... Read More:

VHS : Blackadder - Blackadder II - Series 2 [1986]
This is simply the best. No competition.
The usual superb cast of Blackadder, Baldrick and Percy is joined by the superb characters of Melchett, Nursie and Queen Elizabeth. This is by far the funniest, wittiest series of the Blackadders. The episode involving Lord and Lady Whiteadder is undoubtedly the funniest thirty minutes ever on television.
The only complaint could be that it has to end and it is such a disappointment that there were only ever six episodes made.

One of the funniest specials ever made, but because of some unfortunate editing of this DVD issue you never find out just why the workhouse orphans are so looking forward to Easter...

VHS : Blackadder - Blackadder The Third - Series 3 [1987]
After the disappointment I had suffered on watching `Blackadder II' after `The Black Adder' I wasn't particularly looking forward to watching `Blackadder the Third'. It arrived perfectly formed as the best sitcom I'd ever seen. The shift to Regency England seemed to suit the Production Design of BBC sitcoms and the writing team of Richard Curtis and Ben Elton where firing on all cylinders.

The cast also came into there own, where Blackadder II relied on hackneyed and previously mined comedy of the `Virgin' Queen and her court the residence of the somewhat stupid George, Prince Regent, brought to life by Hugh Laurie worked well as foil to Blackadder without the fret of execution which limited the wit of his ancestor.

The historical ... Read More:

The best of the Blackadders by far. With Baldrick as stupid as ever and George longing to die for 'King and Country', Rowen Atkinsons pesimistic sarcasm really brings a touch of class to this hilarious series.

VHS : The Magician's House - Series 1 [1999]
The Magician's House (Series One) contains six episodes on two cassettes. The main story is a fantastic tale featuring a five hundred year-old magician played by the wonderful Ian Richardson (To Play the King, An Ungentlemanly Act, lots of stage work, etc, etc) who lives in a secret room behind the chimney of a huge old house and must enlist the aid of some children to preserve the magic atmosphere of the house and the valley it sits in. There are talking animals and an evil apprentice to deal with. The film is beautifully shot in Canada by BBC Wales, and this part can be a delight for young people.

There is also a very heavy-handed subplot involving a thoroughly demoralised girl from a broken home who hates her father's new girlfriend and plots ... Read More:

When I first sat down to watch this video, I wasn't expecting much. By the end I was sad to watch it end. It is a great children's video, and the acting is very good. The special effects are very good. The story line is based on book three of the Magician's House, 'The Tunnel Behind the Waterfall' by William Corlett. Starring Ian Richardson, Neil Pearson, Steven Webb, Olivia Coles and Katie Stuart. Featuring Stephen Fry as the voice of Jasper the Owl.

Jeeves would never, never, under any circumstances appear dressed in women's clothing. Still less would he be likely to sing in public. I doubt Bertie would cross dress.
This is a travesty of Wodehouse and I suspect owes more to the inflated ego of the producer who seems to believe that he is a better story teller than Wodehouse than any attempt to show Wodehouse's genius. If like me you are a lover of the true genre do not touch this abberation with a bargepole.

VHS : Gosford Park [2002]
'Gosford Park' is an atmospheric period drama set in 1930's England. It looks at the relationships between upstairs and downstairs in a country manor, combined with a murder mystery story. The murder is the least important aspect of this film and it is excellent as a social piece looking at the hierarchy and social conventions of aristocracy at that time. There is an amazing cast who all perform superbly, Maggie Smith is especially good, but they all act with skill and draw you in to their various characters. The costumes and sets add to the overall feel of the film and it is directed perfectly. It is quite slow paced, which I liked, but those expecting a fast paced thriller will be disappointed, this is one that builds in layers. 'Gosford Park' deserves all the accolades ... Read More:

VHS : Blackadder Goes Forth - Captain Cook / Corporal Punishment / Major Star [1989]
Ben Elton has done it again. Set in 1917 It is the first world war. Captain Edmund Blackadder and his faithful, loyal and cunningly stupid servents Private S. Baldrick and Loutenent George Colthurst. This video has all the wit and humour of all the previous series. Rest assured there will be plenty of cunning plans on the side of Baldrick (With the same usual success rate). There's George's witty remarks and of course there is Captain Darling and General Melchett to keep our good Captain set on his job. Episodes include a plan to get six inches futher into no-mans land, Blackadder's own firing squad and Baldrick's hilarious Charlie Chaplin inpersonation. I have a cunning plan, buy the video and rest assured you won't regret it. Let's just hope we get another series from the episode at ... Read More:
