VHS : Paul And Pauline Calf's Video Diaries [1994]
Absolutely hilarious depiction of Manc lad Paul Calf, with his Chuck Norris haircut and total inability to function as a respectable citizen. Meet his mate Fat Bob, sister Pauline Lulu Calf, and two appearances by playwright Patrick Marber, as Roland the student and Spiros ("like a Greek god, only fatter and with a tache"). Very funny scripts and set-ups, this is a character Coogan ought to revive (Calf in his 40s, still on benefits despite getting four numbers once at the lottery?). One grumble - why isn't this on DVD yet? - my VHS is getting worn out.

VHS : The Indian In The Cupboard [1995]
Having read the book myself as a young child, some twenty years ago I was delighted to discover it had made it to the screen. Watching the movie for the first time brought back all the excitement and wonder that I felt as a child as I eagerly read from page to page. I thought the film was as true to the book as I could remember it. Now, having watched this film over and over with my two young boys, I have ordered the book for them to enjoy themselves, just as I did. I have also discovered the books were part of a continuing series, and I loved this film SO much I would be really delighted if the film production company decided to follow on with the next installment.
Great for children - and grown-ups who loved to read as young children. ... Read More:

VHS : The Wind in the Willows [1996]
This is a so-called kid's movie that's way too good just for kids. It's based on the book The Wind in the Willows. Mr. Toad (Terry Jones) of Toad Hall loves fast cars, crazy inventions, and all the latest fads. He crashes his cars regularly and is spending more money that he has on his enthusiasms. And it seems the Chief Weasel (Antony Sher) and his cronies have been buying up the land Mr. Toad has had to sell. They're going to tear down Toad Hall and build a huge dog food factory in its place. The Chief Weasel plans that the first ingredients to be processed will be Toad and his friends, the meek but brave Mole (Steve Coogan), the picnic-loving, loyal Rat (Eric Idle), and the grumpy, advice-giving Badger (Nicol Williamson). In the words of another reviewer on this page I'm a "nerdy, geekier" fan of the great Mr Partridge, (and I guess you can't get much nerdier or geekier than watching a Christmas special in July, and then writing about it!). This is Alan's t.v career in its death throes. as the planned Perry Como-ish Chrimbo special goes wrong all the way through, and he also makes the fatal error of upsetting Tony Hayes, the BBC head of programming (the one he famously later went on to punch with a cheese!). This whole show is shot through with pathos, most particularly in the add-on of his countryside ramble (which I think, from what I vaguely remember, was originally made for a Fry and Laurie Christmas special), where Alan's loneliness is quite painful to see. ... VHS : Stand Up-Best of British Comedians
I came across this video by accident, and I'm quite glad I did. Recorded back in 1991, it shows some of the familar faces of British TV comedy, when they were still doing stand-up. Frank Skinner, Jo Brand, Jeff Green and Hatty Hayridge (Red Dwarf's 'Holly') to name a few. There is also the chance to see Steve Coogan as the impressionist he started out as, rather than the 'character comedian' he is now.

None of the jokes seem dated, which is surprising considering this recording is more than 10 years old. Well worth a look if you are a fan of any of these people.

VHS : The Day Today - 1 [1994]
When this show first aired on BBC2 in 1997, the mind boggled and the jaw dropped at the outlandish graphics, the inane presentation and the sheer audacity of its attack on TV News.

However, in the immediate aftermath of the war on Iraq, and the corresponding war between the news networks, one can finally appreciate the scale of the genius of the Day Today team.

To see the coverage of Gulf War II on Sky News, CNN, BBC News 24 et al, one had to wonder if the presenters, producers and graphics people responsible for the coverage had either never seen The Day Today, or had seen it with such a lack of irony that they used it as a template for their programming!

The animated tanks forming the station identifiers, the over ... Read More:

I went to see Coogan in London on the same tour but had to buy the video to re-live a superb evening. He plays the characters so convincingly, you'd think someone in Hollywood may have snapped him up by now. His work is so different and original that it's impossible not to be impressed by his talents. This video represents all these qualities. Can't wait for the next one.
