VHS : Doctor Who - Silver Nemesis (The Extended Version) [1988] [1963]
It's hard to believe that "Silver Nemesis" got less than 5 stars average rating. This is an exceptionally good show, especially when you consider that it comes from the Sylvester McCoy era, where most shows were real stinkers! The lovely and attractive Ace is certainly a welcome addition, and the contrasting dialog between her and the Silver Nemesis sent chills up my spine. When Ace says, "Catch you later" to the Silver Nemesis, it's both funny and scary because we know Ace didn't know what to say. If you were faced with the Silver Nemesis you wouldn't know what to say either. It gives us a sense that these characters are very much out of time from each other, and have come together to do what they are suppose to do. Not everyone enjoys this ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Movie [1996]
Doctor Who - The Movie [1996] [1963] This is perhaps one of the most underated DVD's in the whole Doctor Who series both new and classic. The main problem is the bad guy or more specifically the actor who portrays him, Eric Roberts is a great bad guy in lots of B'Movies but just wasn't right for this film (his choice was forced on the writers/director due to pressure from the american backers). On the whole though the film is a great little jaunt, the interior of the TARDIS is fantastic and McGann plays the role fantastically. idea for the future (McCoy, McGann, Eccleston and Tennant) The Four Doctors

Maybe I'm letting nostalgia rule my opinion here, but I still find this story quite enjoyable. True, Bonnie Langford does little but wander about, and then is attacked by a huge bright yellow robotic crab she somehow failed to notice floating on the surface of a swimming pool. But the story has its moments, such as the Doctor outwitting his enemies by use of their own red tape, and the irony of the 'cowardly cutlet' Pex being the only one brave enough to stand up to the Great Architect. True, a lot of what could have been dark, serious drama is camped up. But the Dr Who series had recently been under fire for being too violent and gory. 'Paradise Towers' contains Nazi-type troopers, cannibalistic old ladies, cleaning robots who strangle ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who The Greatest Show in the Galaxy [1963]
So, then. The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. A tale with a decent reputation, a tale that has been well received by everyone else who's reviewed it so far. An 'oddball story', true, but one which commands far more respect within fandom than, say, Delta and the Bannermen. A difficult story to attack, one would say.

But really, it's tripe, isn't it?

OK, that's not entirely fair. 'Tripe' is a strong word, and it isn't one I'd attach to any Doctor Who story. But if I was forced to, really forced to, Greatest Show is without any doubt the one I would choose.

It's a shame, really, because it boasts some excellent features. Mike Morris above mentions the direction (at some length), and fair point, it's a well directed tale. Also you've got the ... Read More:

I hate what people say about this horribly underated story. Its fantastic, funny and I love it to pieces! The Kandy man does not in the slightest remind me of Bertie Basset. He`s a brilliant villan, and him constantly screaming "GILLLBBBEEERRRTTT!!!!!!" just cracks me up. As for that loveable hound Fifi, it`s so sad when Helen A becomes a hypocrite over what happens to her pet(no spoilers here!). Ace is on top form, with the seventh doctor at his best (and you`ll cheer as he talks a man out of shooting him). A complete hoot from start to finish " The Happiness Patrol" is a memorable event in doctor who`s history.

This is a promising tale from the end of Mccoy's first season and sees the introduction of the Ace character. Kane is a wonderful villain. The story is let down by being overlit throughout. Also there is a painfully embarrassing 'Aliens' rip-off scene complete with motion-trackers and oversized guns. Once again this scene is ridiculously overlit, and instead of Vasquez we get a very well spoken Enlgish middle-class lady acting like a hardened marine. PAINFUL!! There is quality to find in this tale however, mainly due to Edward Peel taking it very seriously and it's worth a watch.

I dont agree with the views of many people about this GREAT story. I will list all the great things about it below:

Sylv McCoy: His debut as the Doctor is strong and really different from any of his predecessore. He really feels and comes across as really enjoying the role, and is full of enthusiasm for the role. He really does impress on this his first outing as one of the best incarnations of the time lord actually.

Kate O Mara: If anyone had to pretend to be the Doctors companion, no one else could have done it with the finesse that Kate O Mara does it with as the Rani in this story. Yes, and she is even stronger than in her debut and even seems to look younger! Shes really quite good looking.

Special Effects; This story definitely boasts some of the best effects ... Read More:

Great Stuff of course. Don't let anyone have you believe that Ant and Dec that were somehow cutting edge on Saturday Morning tele. In comparison to Tiswas they were very ordinary and were only made to look half decent because of the BBC's general incompetence to provide a watchable alternative.

It was ever thus. Multi Coloured Swap Shop may have been the Daily Mail reading middle class houswives choice of viewing for their 2.5 children but it was over on ITV that the action was really taking place.

This video has some great moments. Frank Carson's invisible pyrannas reduce Chris Tarrant to geniune hysterics. The bucket of water song, the dying fly, Sally's trick, the suprise appearance from Trevor McDonald (watch carefully).

Gunging became a staple for any vaguely naughty kids ... Read More:

I've never really liked this story. It was the low point of Sylvester McCoy's doctor. I prefer 'Time and the Rani' and 'Paradise Towers'. Every Doctor had their naff stories, but thank god things picked up with 'Dragonfire' and maintained that momentum. Sylvester McCoy ended up giving us one of the best Doctor Who stories with 'Remembrance of the Daleks' and one of the best Doctor Who seasons with his final four stories `Curse of Fenric', `Battlefield', `Ghost Light' and `Survival'. Unfortunately they cancelled the show because of naff stories like this.

I do enjoy light-hearted stuff like `The One Doctor' from Big Finish, but this is just poorly executed and poorly acted.

VHS : Doctor Who - Battlefield [1989]
Series 24 of Dr Who is regarded with no small amount of loathing by a great number of fans. Though it did have its good episodes, Dr Who improved greatly from Series 25 onwards. But there were always holdovers from Sylvester McCoy's shaky first season which still haunted the series throughout his three years in the title role. Battlefield, I have to say, is one of them. It concerns alternative universes and the 'legends' surrounding King Arthur. Quite honestly it just feels like lazy writing. All kinds of Arthurian elements have been thrown in without rhyme or reason. It all looks nice, but where's the story? True, it has its moments, and it's nice to see the Brigadier back in action. It's just a pity it couldn't have been in a story more worthy of this enduring character. Everyone except Nicholas Courtney ... Read More:
